chance a B+/A- rising senior?

I am pretty much on the verge of an A- but my college advisor sees me more as a B+ student. Can i still get into the schools i want despite this: brown (top choice), amherst (2nd choice), williams, johns hopkins, UPenn (legacy)

School: Competitive school in nyc

SAT: 2170 (taking them again in the fall)

Junior Year courses:
- French 5 Honors (AP) : Last year of the class, and I am one of 2 students taking it. highest lever of French offered
- Precalc AB Honors
- Constructing America: Mix of AP US History and AP English - only for our school, its a special course
- Independent Study for painting and drawing anatomy
- AP Biology

Summer Activities: this summer...
- working at the UN writing papers/editing/translating into french for an organization: Global Action on Aging
- Working with a doctor with Stem Cells
- Art class at Colombia University

Interests:
- Art: painting/drawing/sculpture/digital/photograhpy: i have done almost every type of art making there is, but i specialize in drawing and painting. I have been doing so basically since i was born (no joke!) and have been commissioned several times to make paintings for people
- Piano: been playing the piano since i was 4. Followed the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, which was just introduced in NYC this year, so im one of the few kids in the city doing it. I am in grade 9, which means i will be able to teach next year! I've gotten tons of awards/certificates from playing in concerts.
- Medicine: I have been volunteering for 4 hours every Sunday at 2 prominent hospitals in NYC for 2 years now
- Tutoring: have been tutoring a 10th grader at my school in math

AP: I just took the French language and literature (last year!) and Biology

Random: I have lived in Canada for 10 years, London for 3 years, Japan for 2 years and New York City for 2 years. I have great recs, one from my french teacher who told me she "got someone into Yale"...and I love English and writing and it is my favorite subject, so essays shouldn't be a problem.

bump…

Here is my opinion:

Brown (ED??)- Low Reach if RD, High Match if ED
Amherst- Reach
Williams- Reach
JHU- Match/High match
UPenn- High match/ Low reach

thanks! anyone else? i really need the input and i will chance bck!

Hold on, you said that Amherst and Williams will pose more of a problem for me than Brown or UPenn? How does that work? Explain please :)

anyone else? i promise i will chance back right away

bump…

I agree with
Brown (ED??)- Low Reach if RD, High Match if ED
Amherst- Reach
Williams- Reach
JHU- Match/High match
UPenn- High match/ Low reach
from earlier.

I actually over heard so many interviews for brown at starbucks this year and what it seems that they are looking for is a throughly interesting, passionate person (which you seem). go for it ED! (they’re just SO random, i don’t think you can predict)

brown could be a reach but I say go for it and makes yourself shine in the essays and schedule an interview. Amherst is a definite reach bevcause they are pretty concrete about the type of person they let in ie:4.0 GPA. 2250+ SAT, yaddyadda. but still try it you never know.UPEN and JHU- reaches, one ivy and one not as ivy but still up there. they are more than definitely concrete. drop UPEN and go for JHU, they love passion as well especially in the sciences and if you can show that much they’ll love you for it.

If you go to a good NYC private school, your counselor will be able to tell you much more accurately than anyone here where you’ll likely get in. When you have people calling Brown a high match with a B plus, it’s time to talk to your counselor.

Penn is by far your best shot as a legacy, but you’ll have to apply ED.

it would help if you provided GPA & class rank…

So that B+ could really mess up my chances for brown?

then do you guys have any suggestions for school that would fit me?

Brown I’d say you have a good chance at… A low reach, perhaps? I don’t think your B+ is going to affect getting in if you go to a good private school. In fact, if you can demonstrate interest / character, then your B+ is relatively insignificant in my eyes. But who knows, maybe that will play a role in your decision. If you can find out what sort of students get into top colleges from your school, this will give you a much better perspective. Your B+ is relatively insignificant to me if you can show how awesome you are. Because you really do seem awesome, the type of person these schools would be lucky to have. Applying ED may help(?).

Amherst/Williams I see as reaches. They are much smaller than Brown, and even though they might not be “Ivy League” there is something untouchable about them. I don’t know about John Hopkins.

My friend’s Dad went to UPenn. I don’t know much about it… Since you’re a legacy if you demonstrate really strong interest/apply ED, maybe you’ll have a low reach shot?

This is all rather subjective, anyway. The schools you list are truly so difficult to predict… Ivy Leagues and their “equivalents” have so many choices that they literally are able to pick their students as if they were fruit on a tree. I wish you good luck, I hope you get into all of these schools, especially Brown.

If your B+ may keep you from Brown, you may want to check out…

Vassar College (one of my top choice schools, similar to Brown in many ways… in others not. Maybe I’d see you there :P)

Wesleyan (CT)

I’d feel weird recommending anymore without knowing your preference for schools…

Chance back if ya want;)

You are an ideal UPenn student. :] I’d say Amherst Williams is a reach and so is brown.

Thanks guys it helps!

Im also curious about bowdoin and swarthmore…any comments?

Bowdoin high match, Swarthmore low reach
