I honestly think you’re in! I’m a Tepper student and had similar stats to you and I’m white (although a first-gen from an immigrant family). Yes, your GPA is a little low and your ACT is average/just below, but you have many hooks and your SAT IIs are ballin’. If you’re not in for business, you’re absolutely in for HSS, and you can just transfer into Tepper after a semester or two. Good luck!

Thank you honor student

Btw. Do you know if cmu is generous with financial aid?

Yes and no. It depends. If you’re an African American immigrant, i’d say you’d get a good aid package. The only reason i’m actually at CMU is because of the financial aid, it ended up being cheaper than my instate school tuition for me. If I could have afforded any school to my pleasing, I would not be at CMU. That said, I can also count on my hands the amount of kids I know here that have significant aid packages (meaning 24k+ a year, I got 38k a year). Many kids I know are paying full tuition, thus my yes and no answer (perhaps just because it is a prestigious school, and generally having money = getting into better schools). It seems like that financial aid packages are hard to come by at CMU, but when you do, they’re really good.

Thanks honor student. Btw. What program are you in? Do you enjoy cmu/Pittsburg? Was the transition to college hard? Does the business program place an emphasis on math and science?

I’m a business double with another major in HSS. I do not particularly enjoy CMU, but I really do love Pittsburgh. The transition will be hard if you didn’t have good study skills in high school, which I didn’t. But I know some kids who are amazing at juggling many different activities on top of classes, so it really depends on the student. I’m not sure how much of an emphasis we place on math and science since I don’t know how it is at other schools, so I can’t really compare. But I have found the math classes to be interesting/not too terrible (although some people struggle, I’ve always just liked math).

You can get away with science reqs pretty easy, but we are required to take a computer programming class (which I’m assuming is not as common at other schools, but hey we are CMU and are known for CS) + another one in the information systems department. It also depends what track you’re on within business. Finance/accounting track majors need a lot more math based classes than others like me (I’m done with my math after this semester b/c I’m on the international management track).
