Interviews:

Only one I had so far was for MIT: EC said that he'll "send off a report right away telling them how wonderful you are". I thought the interview went quite well, we got along really well and talked bout everything from the food at MIT to some questions on standard deviation in Stats. Another note...The EC and I probably laughed more than we actually talked lol..he was a very funny, jolly old man and I have quite a sense of humor.

Essays:

Common App one was about how my grandpa(who raised me till 6 years old) passing away and living in rural China for 6 year has influenced me, the additional information section essay was about my first experience of U.S. culture and language, and how multiple relocations have affected me, short answer was on piano. The engineering supplements required by some colleges were about my grandpa's influence, my pursuit in math and science teams, helping mom with proteomics research, customized for each college.

Thanks in advance for all your chances.

Bump, please chance me guys…

Bump again, Please chance, I’ll chance you back!

well with those stats you are competitive in all of those schools, but make sure you can afford all these schools, universities are NOT NEED BLIND to international applicants so if you apply for fianiancial aid then i have no idea becuase your admission chances will go down. but overall you stand a very good chance at most of these schools due to your grades

@biganthony

That’s the reason why I’m applying to the Ivy Leagues because they’re need-blind to International applicants, and award need-based financial aid. So…ironically, the colleges that I have the BEST shot at getting into are actually the most competitive ones…Paradox eh?

well it really depends on the school, because im applying to UPenn and when I visited they explicitly stated that for international students they are NOT NEED BLIND, but for other Ivy’s perhaps they are

Wow… i’m seriously impressed by your stats. I would accept you if i’m the admin :smiley:

Since you going to science/engineering majors, you don’t want to choose Ivy for that–Ivy isn’t top for engineering.
MIT, CalTech, UC Berkeley are the ones you should be looking for.

for UCs except UC Berkeley, probably safety schools. Engineering Ivy (if there is such a term :D) (MIT, CalTech, UC Berkeley…etc): I would say match.

HOLY MACRO!!! how many r u applying dude??? if i were u, i would simply focus on 2 safety schools, 1 low-reach, 2 mid-reach, and 2 high-reach

anyways, u have decent stat, but not steller. Good EC, ur piano will help u, but not a lot since ur not applying to musical performance. it would be good if ur considering submitting supplementary materials to impress the admins.

gluck!

I say you are ultra competitive, but let’s be honest with ourselves: you don’t stand out. You sorta blend in with everyone who is applying to Harvard the near perfect (if not perfect) SAT scores, the same awards, the same activities. I say that you right one K.A. essay and show who you are and try to distinguish yourself from the rest of the applicants. If you do that, then I say your chance is better than the rest! Good luck!

@shauna2015

Thanks for your input,

I believe that my essays, like you said, would be the defining element of my application. As such, I have chosen very personal and vivid moments to illustrate in my compositions, such as the death of my grandfather in rural China and the numerous challenges which I have had to overcome. In my essays, I have opted to focus more on their influences on me rather than the actual events, an approach that will hopefully set me apart from the thousands of other applicants who chose the same “dead grandmother” essay topic.

I’m not sure if being an international applicant would either benefit or penalize me in the Harvard applicant pool. Since Harvard has only one pool, I’m not sure if the diversity I offer would set me apart…or whether there would be so many Chinese people from China applying that I would just be another fish in the swarm…

^ yea your not gonna exactly add to the diversity, and like other said, your stats are like many other applicants so kill the essay

@kevin101

The Common App application page shows around 20 schools ;D.

The piano’s role in my application is just to offer another facet of my personality and depth. By showing that I have succeeded in my pursuits will hopefully show the colleges that I have strong passion for my goals, which is a characteristic reiterated over and over again.
This might sound a little silly, but it is the truth. The reason for me applying to Harvard, aside from my love of the campus, is to make my relatives in rural China proud. Dang, I can still remember the joyous look on their faces when I left for the U.S. And back in rural China, Harvard was the only college that had an universal connotation for success. I guess in order to honor my grandpa’s memory and my relatives in China, I must get into Harvard, no matter how much of an reach it is. (Both of my parents grew up in rural China as well, and through hard work, got into the Harvard and MIT equivalents in China, an almost unimaginable feat in those days, considering the strong bias towards the rich after the Cultural Revolution, their chances were around 1/10,000,000 since they were the only ones in their entire PROVINCES to get into those schools)

@scales1994

Hopefully I did my friend…hopefully I did…

I did write my heart out though, and almost cried a couple times on my grandpa essay…

When my mother read it, she cried and the English teacher I gave it to said that the essay was very unique and emotional.

So Harvard is the only thing that will make them proud? Wow.

^ Yep, and it’s really the only school that I myself would be happy to go to, I mean don’t get me wrong, any of those schools would be “fine” for me, but prepare for dramatic statement I feel as if though my life would be complete if I got into Harvard.

Lol… I have this ritual I do at nights now, where I would listen to Hans Zimmer’s Time and dream about walking off the plane into Harvard and staring up into the window of the dorm room where I attended Harvard SSP.

I’m seriously chancing you, so please seriously chance me.

Harvard-high reach (it is for everyone)

Caltech-HIGH HIGH HIGH REACH. (This is for everyone, sorry!)
Stanford-high reach

Bump.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Your stats are impressive, but you have to realize that the applicant pool these years are very very strong. Maybe you’re an amazing writer, but the essay topics you chose are very clich

I’d say the upper ivies (HYP, Columbia) are reach, the other ivies and Ivy caliber (Stanford, Johns Hopkins, UChicago, etc) are low reach. U of M down goes from match to low reach (for Northwestern/Berkeley).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1049165-these-hooks-could-get-me.html

@iceui2

Yes, i did realize that my essay topics were common, but I did put very very personal moments and “twists” into them. In my grandpa essay, I delved into the life that I lived with him, and how one “ox-cart” rescue has helped shaped my character, among other events of course.

If you would like, I could PM you my essays for you to read? Just so you can get a more complete picture of me as a person.
