Do you guy’s think I will have a decent shot? My class rank is pretty poor but hopefully the admission officer’s won’t discredit me because I’m not 4 or 5 spots higher right?

oh and I’m a confirmed and active Catholic which I made note of on the common app, if that holds any bearing on admission, which I think I’ve heard it does…

Dear Iluvskool : The weakest element in your profile given the CSOM application intention is your 640 score on the Mathematics section, the area which carries a bit more weight for a CSOM applicant (analytical reasoning). This is a third quartile score in the average acceptance pool which places you below the midpoint.

Being outside of the Top 10% in your graduating class is an issue based on the numbers; 85% of accepted/enrolled students are Top 10% of their High School class.

You have a chance to demonstrate leadership skills via your class presidency and treasurer role, but you profile insufficient details to give any deeper insight here. The remainder of your profile elements read like the tens of thousands of other applicants for Boston College. Nothing here is really unique or standout that answers the question “why should Boston College accept me?”

So, to add value, let’s offer some thoughts to provoke your thinking :

[1] You took the time to mention your Hospital Volunteerism. Why? What was it about those 40 hours that would make “one standard work week” stand out from a four year high school career?

[2] You have shown commitment to track for three years. Why? Aside from putting a tick in the sports box, what was it about those three years that were special to you personally, your team, or your school?

[3] Most of the applicant pool at BC were NHS members. What makes your experience in NHS different from the thousands of others?

In essence, I am challenging you to answer why you make Boston College a better place for the OTHER ATTENDEES in your class. Answer that question in your essay and you will have unlocked the combination for acceptance provided that you can step up your board scores.

Thanks, hopefully I can articulate what makes me different in my essay and expand upon upon some of those Ec’s in some way as a couple are very important to me. What kind of math score do you think I need to be competitive though? Does BC not place much importance on writing because I know my composite is about their mean…
