Chance a current junior please!

I am a junior - Asian American (great, I know!)

However, unlike most of my peers I am NOT by any means a "math/science" person, though I do love math, I love english/humanities wayyyy more!

Here's a break down of my stats as of right now:

Rank: 3/ 550 people --> though this year, my classes along with ECs have been extremely difficult. So im hoping I can maintain that level even after exams, which are coming up so soon!

GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: score without much studying - 29 (however, I will make SURE this goes up by June. My goal is a 32+ and im quite confident that i can do it with proper prep. Im studying!)

ECs: (I think this is the stronger portion of my app...let me know ur opinions..)

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a looong time, i am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class rec!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from columbia university (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specfically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recogonizing the top few papers internationally...please share ur opinions!

What do you think??

Very qualified. Are you in/out of state? If you’re in-state, submit your app early, and you’ll get in without a doubt.

Im out of state unforutnately. Im from IL. I know they have rolling admissions, so I had a question -

Can i submit my app as early as Sept? If so, how early can I hear from them?

Way underqualified… Especially if u are instate, then you have no chance. But seriously, the ACT is good enough and personally I wouldn’t bother to retake it. But if you are shooting for scholarships or applying to honors then i guess it wouldn’t hurt.

So u are out of state then… u will hear back by mid december if u submit your app for early decision. In your case, It may very well be earlier

thanks samuelson! what do u think i could do to improve my chances or my app?

Definitely score highly on the ACT. If you’re OOS and apply early, then you still have a very strong chance. It’ll be easier to judge if you posted a UM gpa instead of your highschool weighted one.

No offense Hardworker, but how did u get a 29 outta 36 on the ACT and have a GPA of 4.7 and “Class load: hardest possible no doubt!” But you should definitely take the ACT again. Especially with scholarships, if you want lots of money aka like something like full tuition try and get a 34. I get that you didnt study but if familiarize yourself with it, you should be able to get that easily. Unless you are a poor test taker which seems unlikely, you should be able to do a lot better on your ACT.

GOOD LUCK!

applying early is key and often makes the biggest difference. Retake the ACT again and do well fall semester of senior year (pick hard classes). If u get deferred (I doubt u will), as long as u have a solid fall semester senior year grades, then u should be fine. If that happens, write a letter just in case. O, and put a little effort into your essays.

Honestly if you apply in September you’ll get in for sure. You may even hear back by October or November. I’m from Illinois too and I know many people who got in with similar statistics.
