Chance a Junior!

I am a junior - Asian American (great, I know!)

However, unlike most of my peers I am NOT by any means a "math/science" person, though I do love math, I love english/humanities wayyyy more!

Here's a break down of my stats as of right now:

Rank: 3/ 550 people --> though this year, my classes along with ECs have been extremely difficult. So im hoping I can maintain that level even after exams, which are coming up so soon!

GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting)
Class load: hardest possible no doubt!
ACT: score without much studying - 29 (however, I will make SURE this goes up by June. My goal is a 32+ and im quite confident that i can do it with proper prep. Im studying!)

ECs: (I think this is the stronger portion of my app...let me know ur opinions..)

Editor-in-chief of School Paper - first junior to become one in a looong time, i am absolutely certain that the newspaper advisor will write me a first class rec!

Question: Our school paper won a national award from columbia university (silver crown) during my time this year as EIC, is something I should mention? This award is not directed to me specfically but more to our entire paper. I think it's appealing as it is an award recogonizing the top few papers internationally...please share ur opinions on this (I dont want to sound desperate or anything when mentioning awards in my app by using ones that give me a bad impression, but do keep in mind, this award was recieved under my direction as EIC...so idk if that makes a difference or not!)

History fair state finalist/winner, potential national qualifer (will find out in a couple weeks!)

Internship at congressman office summer before junior year

Likely to obtain internship at Senate Office this summer (already applied! From the looks of it, the intern coordinator seemed enthusiastic when I called her, so hopefully this works out for me!)
***NOte: i have no connections whatsoever, i know i wont be able to tell this to admissions officers but i just feel better after letting u all know =)

DECA state winner

I have several other ECs but I feel that these are my main ones and the ones that I am most proud to be involved in!

What do you think??

whatever you do, do not make your application a list of clubs. Focus on your interest and show how your activities support that. Overall, I see no reason you can’t get into GTown. I know people half as bright as you are who got in.

I have 3 things to say about this thread:

1) You’re not even finished with your junior year, its too early for chance threads. Psychologically, this shouldnt be consuming you yet. Being waitlisted, I dont even kno whether im in or not yet at Gtown

2) a long list of ECs mean nothing to top colleges…in fact it can hurt your chances, it shows how you cant commit to anything b/c you’re split between everything. (the app only lets you list 6 things…SIX…not an infinite amount)

3) this comes off as a little arrogant…i get it, ur smart, but so is pretty much everyone else thats gunna look at this if they want to go to Gtown…what do you want me to tell you “YOU’RE IN!”???

The college admission process is very humbling, random, and painful…theres no telling whats gunna happen when you reach this realm of college admissions (the kid two lockers away from me got rejected from Brown and UPenn, but was accepted into Harvard…i was told by Boston College that i was in their top 5% of acceptances yet i got rejected/waitlisted at half of the schools i applied to)

Do all you can, finish your junior year strong, fret over what you’re doing this summer, then you can worry about getting into schools…until then, get off this website, its addictive and makes you consume about acceptance letters way too much. good luck.

“State Pageant winner (first runner up) and miss talented”

Please don’t include that as one of your top ECs by any means! Anyway, as the other posters have said, you need some focus. When admissions officers talk about you to one another (which you hope they will!) what will they refer to you as? Meaning, they will call you the “_____________” kid. For example, I am the “enormous project for shipping books to Africa” kid.

To be less convoluted, make one defining passion stand out in your application through your extracurricular and other work. By showing such clear definition in your application, you’ll stand out in the minds of the decision makers!

^thanks for ur input.

As far as the pageant goes, is there a particular reason u think i shouldnt include it? Because ive heard from countless people that, including a girl who got into HYPS who had pageants as her main ECs get, that it shows u are well-rounded…so idk what ur thinking is exactly behind that, but please feel free to share so i know what might be best…but it is certainly something I am rather proud of and I think it shows that I have confidence and can interact well with others since beauty pageants are clearly not only about beauty…however, with that, I will definitely include it at the top…i mean i listed here toward the bottom for a reason as well.

Secondly, I agree some of these ECs are rather unimportant, namely DECA and NHS…but I feel that everything else I’ve done has gone very in-depth…? I mean even MHS president, I was committed to advancing the organization in some way by creating a website to help members stay updated and submit hours…so i mean in everything I’ve done, I really thought I showed commitment in it, especialyl since I’ve done these activities since like freshman year…

REgardless, it’s great to have fresh perspectives examine what you have to offer and I am glad you guys were able to do htat for me…! And yes, I am working hard to maintain my grades and believe or not, I don’t use this website as an addicition. In fact, a lot of what I’ve achieved today is BECAUSE of this website…which has actually been my motivation. SO i find it ironic that YOU’RE here telling me to get off the website when I am certain you were in the same position as me just monhts ago.

Again, I thank you for your advice and I know my weakness now: focus! And i will be working hard to get that fixed.

Thanks!

Please realize that we are just sharing our opinions with you because, after all, you did ask for them. Necrophiliac and I (and XYZ too?) are both Georgetown admits, so I’d like to think we know at least something about the process. If we ticked you off, use it as motivation- whatever floats your boat. Don’t become cynical whatever you do. In addition, remeber that there are other aspects of your application which we simply cannot evaluate over this medium. Regardless, I wish you best of luck; I hope to see you on campus in 2010.

Yes, I appreciate that more than you can imagine.

Congrats to you all…and yes, hopefully I do get to see you on Campus in the future!

“State Pageant winner (first runner up) and miss talented”

I would definitely include that in your application. Set you apart and its unique.
