My class rank and GPA were as low as they seem since I was unable to take honors classes in those two years. In my freshman year, I first had to adapt to the new environment and learn the languages at the same time. Since I was in Essentials and ESL classes, I had to go up to regular classes first, in order to place myself in higher courses.

As a junior now, I am finally in all honors classes except for my English class. Next year, four APs with two honors.

During the last summer, I'm planning to do..
I formed an organization to contribute to the communities by having musical concerts with exceptionally talented friends. I hope this would go well!
Planning to do an internship.

I think my ECs are weak, so this summer is my last chance to bring up all my Extra activities. I'm trying to get officer positions from the clubs that I participated. Hopefully it will help me :p

Standardized test scores
PSAT 2007 147
2008 200
SAT1 Math Writing Reading
720 680 670 (2070)
760 690 620 (2070)
Took one in May, and I really hope I broke 2200 on this one.
I think my TOEFL would cover for my low critical reading score.

SAT2
Math 2C 790
Math 1C 770
Chemistry 780
Physics June
Biology/World Civ maybe November for my last shot

TOEFL July (110+)

Other facts
3 years in the U.S.

Colleges that I'm applying.. (I'm graduating HS 2010)
(Major Engineering)

Cornell University ED
UChicago EA
Rochester
CMU
NYU Stern (Can I apply here for business even though I apply for engineering to other colleges?)
Harvey Mudd
Rutgers
UIllinois
UCLA
Cooper Union
(I need some more safeties)

Guys I'm really inclined to go to Cornell but I am aware of my low GPA and SAT scores. I'm ready to fully commit myself to Cornell if I get accepted with my Early Decision. My excuse for my low GPA and SAT scores is that I really had hard time to adapt into the society because of my lack of English at first, and I couldn't think of anything else besides making new friends and trying to understand what people around me were saying.

Advise me with ECs, or more test scores that I can do to raise my chances.

I welcome harsh and realistic comments, but hopeful comments as well :p

I really appreciate your attentions to this post!!

ur gpa system is a little off. schools would prob recalculate it with honors=.5 extra and ap= 1 pt extra.

Any awards or placement at competitions for science or forensics??

I think you’ll get into chicago

nope… not a significant award… :(

I think you’ll get rejected from Chicago, weak class rigor.

I had to work my way up from ESL classes to AP classes so I had no other way of taking rigorous classes.

^^^exactly. thats like you getting shipped off to the north pole to go to high school with eskimos. You have to learn their language which all classes are taught in.(this is theoretical lol). Do you see how hard it is now?

Immigrants have to face more difficulties, and I commend the OP’s achievements. My comment still stands “Weak class rigor” compared to other applicants. With its boatloads of applicants, Chicago can pick on any factor for rejection.

OP, what state are you in, NJ? Is financial aid an important factor (I assume so, since you’re a recent immigrant?) because I notice you have two state schools on your list… ><

I didnt know fobs call themselves fobs…

“Can I apply here for business even though I apply for engineering to other colleges?” Yes you can.

I think you can get into Illinois, pretty sure.

I’m not considering any financial aid and I’m from NJ!
I’m thinking UIllinois pretty much as a safety, assuming I broke 2200 on SAT in May
well SAT score comes out in 12 hrs now…
and also I’m MUCH more inclined and dedicated to Cornell University.
do I have a shot?
thank you for your comments, Fiona, collegebound, and einnob

just got the result for may one… didn’t do that great
so I’ll take my last shot in Oct
Math 800 CR 680 Writing 690

another bump~~~
