Chance a Former Slacker, Rising Senior

Hi guys,
I used to be a huge slacker. I didn't do homework , never studied for tests, did nothing after school...It was a disaster. Then about halfway through my sophomore year I realized that what I was doing was gonnna hurt me in the long run. From that point on I never recieved below a B. However, the damage had alraedy done,as my freshman year GPA was pretty low and my sophomore year GPA was just ok. This year I had a huge improvement and really did as well as I know I can.

So heres my stats, and let me know what you think.

Freshman year: 2.78 GPA
Sophomore Year: 3.14 GPA (Honors English)
Junior Year: 3.72 GPA (AP Gov, Honors English, History, Business classes. Awaiting AP exam score for AP Gov)

Cumulative GPA: 3.23

School doesn't weight.

I go to a top 10 school in NJ, and we typically do very well at most colleges (Northern Highlands)

First time: 610 Math, 620 Reading, 640 Writing 1870 total.
Second time: 610 Math , 620 Reading, 680 writing, 1910 total.
Considering taking a third time come october.

Really interested in something like a business/ film joint program, whether it be Majoring in business in minoring film, or a communications and business double major.

So can I overcome my bad freshman year with my huge upward trend?

e - You have an uphill battle ahead. Your SAT scores are a little above average (within your school) … GPA a little above average … course difficulty a little above average … class rank second/third decile … ECs a little above average … etcetera. These stats would place you in the bottom third of Tulane’s incoming class.

On the positive side, North Highland’s GCs probably have a working relationship with Tulane Admissions … and it doesn’t hurt that you’d be a full pay student. Tulane online applications are still zero cost (I believe) so give it a shot.

Right now, it’s a reach. Tulane rejected 34,000 out of 44,000 students this year, so obviously lots of strong candidates did not get in.

I’m from Bergen Cty, NJ and I know of the strong reputation of your high school. That being said, I believe you are probably right now in the bottom 50% of your class rank.

So…keep improving your grades…you will need pretty much straight A’s. If you get straight A’s by the 2nd marking period, send in your grades. (be proactive).

Take the SAT’s this Fall…hopefully you will get at least 1300.

EC’s look okay and you are taking challenging classes.

Even with a 1300 SAT score and a 4.0 senior year, I would still consider this a “slight reach”…but you never know…let the school know how interested you are. etc…and things may work out in your favor.

Hey I was in DECA too! Ah…memories.

(I know I have added nothing to this post.)

That’s OK, we are a very conversational group on here.

Congrats on Brown. 15 minutes from me.

Express interest and you will get in. There were 10,000 people accepted last year to fill 1,500 seats. Obviously there are concerns about yield. Make it a point to let Tulane know that it is your first choice and you have a very good shot.

I like your name, Rising Chemist. LOL. I have to ask was that a play on my name (since that was your first post)? But he does not have a very good shot, he has an somewhat long to OK shot. First of all there are 1680 entering this fall. The target is about 1500-1550. Second they also did not accept about 34,000 students. Finally his stats are on the low side for Tulane these days, less than 25th percentile for the incoming class this year. He certainly has a shot especially if, as you correctly point out, he shows strong interest. But given where those stats place him, I have trouble understand why you say he has a “very good” shot.

As an aside, since they are oversubscribed (so to speak) for the space they really have available, I don’t think they are actually concerned about yield. Unless you meant they were concerned it would go higher. That might be true, because any higher just makes the strain on the dorm space and other resources worse.

My name is not a play on yours. I don’t even know who you are. It is a funny coincidence though. I was recently promoted at DuPont, thus my name.

Cool, congrats on the promotion and welcome to CC. Are you a Tulane alum, or is there some other connection?

I am an alum and I have a child there now. We are from Rhode Island too - small world.

Wow, that really is!

^weird coincidence, you guys.
