Chance a junior?

I posted this on What Are My Chances, but had no luck, so I decided to post it on each individual college.

Your outline looks solid. I wouldn’t bother retaking the SAT I with a 2300. The increase in score won’t make much difference at that level. Spend your time on your EC’s and essays.

Are you considering sending an arts supplement in piano?

Thank you for the feedback.
How would I compare to someone who has a 4.0 gpa but same SAT as me? My main concern is definitely my gpa/rank, but I’m really relying on my dramatic change this year…
Also, should I submit the 3 in Euro? It was just a bad experience overall. Hated the course and the teacher. I don’t want this one stupid score to end up being the deciding factor between me and one other person for a spot. At the same time, if I don’t submit, would the adcoms think I did worse than a 3?
I will definitely submit an arts supplement for piano. Can you briefly describe how that impacts my application? Does it help really?

Side note: I really appreciate honest, unexaggerated comments. My guidance counselor is one of those who would encourage a student with a 1.2 gpa to apply to Harvard, and my parents are ones who tell me I’d be lucky if I got into state school. I want to know my true standing.

I agree with Cantiger that 2300 is enough. I’ve heard that anything over 2200 is good enough to get into the pile that considers the rest of your stats.

Same goes for your 3.82 GPA.

You get in the pile that now has admissions officers looking at your ECs and essays and you as a person.

You look great, both grades-wise and tennis doesn’t hurt. Concentrate on your essays and submit an arts supplement if possible.

Good luck.

I do have quite a few B’s, though. And my rank is not very outstanding in a decent public high school…how does this affect me?
Also, I had an 800 in math and only 700 in CR…should I try to get a higher reading score?

Is a rank of 5-10 in a class of 350ish “bad” in the eyes of Pton adcoms?

Top 5-10 in a class of about 350 is around top 2-3% so no that’s not “bad”! Remember that Princeton will take into consideration the strength of your class and school overall.

To answer your earlier question, an arts supplement is an opportunity to showcase some of your talent. Even if you don’t major in music, that arts supplement shows admissions where you might plug into some of the activities happening on campus. It also shows them where you have invested yourself over the years and the depth of your passion.

As an interesting side note, we went to hear the orchestra perform Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring over a year ago at Preview and since it was their last performance of the year, the conductor introduced all the graduating students and listed their area of concentration and certificate work. I was amazed that around half of them had no connection to music in their degree focus yet were accomplished enough to perform the pieces with a great degree of skill. It was fascinating.

I love Stravinsky! I will be visiting Pton/the music dept on the 12th.
How can I improve my EC’s/intangibles?

I’m a junior as well hoping to attend Princeton and your SATs are incredible. I’ve been working hard to get to that point and will be taking the SAT Nov. 2

Thank you, and good luck to you! Anyone else out there have any advice?
