Chance a kid with legacy but bad grades for UMich?

My brother graduated from Michigan in 2008.
I live in Florida.
I'm a hispanic jew.

What are my chances for getting into University of Michigan- Ann Arbor?

GPA 3.4/3.8

Freshman year 6 honors, 6 Bs
Sophomore year 6 honors, 3 As 3 Bs
Junior year 4 honors 2 APs, 3As 3 Bs (Bio AP, APUSH)
Senior year 2 honors 4 APs... (AP French, AP Statistics, AP Government/AP
Macroeconomics, AT Microbiology)

^^^
I guess that shows an upward trend?

SAT: took twice got 1310/2030 E:11 Will take one more time
ACT: took once got a 30 E:10 Will take one more time

^^^
Which one should I send in? I heard Michigan likes the ACT more than the SAT.

I want to major in Biology

Is my URM status (hispanic) very beneficial?

Thanks!

You would probably get in even if you weren’t a legacy.

Thanks, but what makes you say that?

URM, course rigor, good ECs.

you’ll def. get in

Michigan is a reach, but not impossible. URM status does not help as much as it used to and legacy carries very little weight. A 3.4 unweighed GPA is just too low to make it a safety, even for an URM.

OP - Is there any way you can perform at an unweighted A range for the rest of this year and next? Eg. don’t work outside school, turn down your ecs a little, and just hammer on the marks? You’d increase your chances if you could show a 2-term trend (eg. when you apply next year, update your grades if you’re on trimester or give midmarks all As). My son really kicked it up for junior and senior year and he got in. His freshman and sophomore years were similar to yours. So there’s always a chance.

PS Re: standardized tests: You can send both in. They correlate anyway statistically, but the full SAT shows a stronger writing portion than straight math and verbal, so it won’t hurt. Both are in range for admission (generally) though not the high end of that. Again, my son’s were simliar.

i dont get why some people are saying i will definitely get in and some are saying i have no chance??
does anybody actually go to michigan or get accepted what were your stats?

randomhispanic, nobody said you had no chance, but your chances are not good as some posters seem to think. Below are stats of admitted students into the latest Michigan class:

Mid 50% unweighed GPA: 3.8-4.0 (85% of admitted students graduated with unweighed GPAs over 3.6)

Analysis: Your GPA is signficantly lower than Michigan’s range

Mid 50% SAT range (CR and Math): 1280-1500 (average 1390)

Mid 50% SAT range (including Writing): 1940-2190 (average 2065)

Analysis: Your SAT is slightly lower than the Michigan mean

Mid 50% ACT range: 28-32 (average 30)

Analysis: Your ACT is right around the mean.

Michigan has no preference between the ACT and the SAT, but I would probably submit the ACT rather than the SAT as it is comparatively higher.

Overall analysis: For a school to be a safety, the applicant must be above the mid 50% range. In the case of Michigan, the applicant should have an unweighed GPA close to 4.0 with an SAT score of 1500+ (2200+) or an ACT score of 33+. For a score to be a reach, the applicant must be below the mid 50% range. In the case of Michigan, the applicant should have a GPA under 3.7 with an SAT score under 1300 (1900) or an ACT score under 28.

Your ACT is right around the midpoint, but your GPA is well below the mid 50% range. As such, Michigan is a reach.

http://www.admissions.umich.edu/about/

The GPA is the number factor considered in reviewing an application for admission to Michigan. A GPA under 3.5 is an obstacle. Being a legacy if it is a factor at all is only going tip someone over the fence. I think the legacy question is on the application primarily to appease alumni who want their family members to attend Michigan by letting them think that their alumni status will make a difference.

Admissions is holistic, and nobody can say for sure. Because my own son managed to get in despite having a lower-than-average GPA, I usually chime in where a students stats are borderline to let them know it is POSSIBLE to get in with such stats. But for every exception, there are 10 others who didn’t get in with a 3.5 range unweighted GPA, especially from out of state. The rigor and reputation of your school also has influence – a 3.5 range from my son’s school, where the entire program is honors and admission is selective (magnet), is historically given a little more weight than the average school. So the posters who are giving you highly optimistic chances seem to be giving an unreasonable amount of weight to your URM status are perhaps not well informed. Alexandre, on the other hand, is a moderator, alumni and recruiter. He is telling you it’s POSSIBLE (as am I) but statistically NOT A SURE BET – after all, you are asking about the CHANCES of admission. For chances, statistics are the most reliable measure.
I am suggesting that you attempt to improve your GPA because that is the single biggest obstacle in your successful admission, and it is the one most heavily weighted at U of M. In any case, be sure to apply Early Action (not binding). That’s what the counselor from UM would tell you given your profile.
So don’t be discouraged but do manage your applications in a way that also gives you some safeties from which to select.

you might have a chance to apply ED next year from what we have heard; in that case, you should be fine…

apparently, this change has already been “let out of the bag” at info sessions this spring…

I think you’ll get in because I did, and we are sort of similar.

I am a legacy (grandparents professors, uncles, aunts, and parents all attended)
We both had the same SATs and ACT. (I would advise sending them both in, that’s what I did)
We both had similar EC’s (although mine were a little different)

While I had all A’s in APs and honors, I think the admissions will like to see that you challenged yourself.

Also, the admissions likes service. I was at Campus Day for admitted students and the admissions person was like “I read a bunch of your applications and every single one of you had service”
I think they definitely want that and you definitely have that.

Also, you are hispanic while I am not, which is in your favor.
Holistic admissions are your friend.

I think you have a good chance.
I mean, everyone will have their own opinion, but in the end, it is impossible to predict.
best of luck!!!
