Chance a low ranked brown kid who got a B in gym for Brown & top20+

You have a great well thought out list and I’m sure you will have a number of great places to choose from. Whether you get into Brown or any other college will be how well you demonstrated your fit for the school (and some luck)

The one thing no school will care about is your B in Gym class!

Thank you! I knew about demonstrated interest, but not to the extent that colleges tracked it to.

Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words! It’s just killing me having to wait until end of March/April to get my decisions.

Got into UIUC!

Congrats - so that’s cognitive science?

So where do you stand now? Is UIUC at the top of your list for now of those you’ve gotten into?

Yeah, I got into Brain and Cognitive Sciences which is in the college of arts and sciences. Still going to wait on the financial aid offers, but most likely it’ll be UIUC over Marquette as they are much stronger for my major, although if I get into the honors program at Marquette it might change. Now it’s a long wait until end of March for the rest of my decisions!

You only get to do this once (well, til grad school), so enjoy the wait - you don’t go to a $100 steakhouse and wolf down a meal in 5 minutes (well you shouldn’t), so you don’t need to know your future in the next ten minutes

You’ve bot two great options already - so the rest is icing on the cake!!

In at Rochester (my top realistic choice) and Richmond.

Waitlisted at Swarthmore which I’ll take considering I was expecting a rejection

Impressive.

So why is Rochester above UIUC? Not saying it shouldn’t be - it’s a very respected school- just curious as to your rationale. Have you been?

Both R schools you got into are wonderful.

Swatty is obviously much smaller - and near impossible to get in - so they didn’t give you the ultimate boot - sure, you’re a hedge for them in case they don’t get enough acceptances to enroll. But they think you can cut it - and that’s awesome!!

btw - you said Rochester and Richmond were a target - so your analysis was spot on!!!

If any Swarthmore was a little ego boost, would have loved to get admitted but wasn’t bummed out by it at all.

Rochester is much higher than UIUC because of UR’s open curriculum and cluster system. Also despite my major being relatively new, it’s extremely well designed at UR with different tracks of specialization and a really well put together curriculum. And I have the possibility of double majoring in CS at Rochester, which would be nearly impossible at UIUC. They also have me 10k merit per year, waiting for the full financial aid but my guess based on the NPC is that it’ll either be same price as UIUC or cheaper. Very satisfied with this result, only schools I would pick over UR would be WashU, Rice, Yale, maybe NU and Vandy, and my true number one, Brown. But grad school always exists for those

Very well thought out!!

No matter where you end up no doubt you’ll have a great 4-year experience!

Congrats

Thank you for your kind words! I got into Case Western as well with 25k scholarship, but even after scholarships + grants they want us to pay around 47k per year. Is this worth appealing considering their my intuition price calculator said 18-28k?

You or a parent can certainly call financial aid and talk to them about your aid package. Did you save the results of the calculator you did? If you did my intuition, do the NPC, that is often more detailed, and hence more accurate. Net Price Calculator | Financial Aid | Case Western Reserve University

That seems like a fairly large difference. Have you double-checked that the NPC data you entered matches your CSS Profile and FAFSA? Do you have circumstances that would make the NPC less accurate – such as divorced parents or your family owns a small business? if not, then I think it is definitely work calling financial aid and politely asking them about the large discrepancy.
And just so you know, it’s fine for parents to contact the financial aid office on behalf of their students (it isn’t fine for admissions) – just in case you think your parents might be the best ones to call.

Based on MyIntiution, it looks like Case Western includes at least a portion of home equity as part of your assets. Do you think that might be where the difference comes from?

Just thought I’d give a near final update as my decisions are wrapping up

Rejected:
WashU
Vandy
northwestern
Northeastern
Tufts
Georgetown
Williams

Waitlists:
Rice
Swarthmore

Acceptances:
UIUC
Marquette
Lehigh
Case Western (25k merit)
U of Richmond
U of Rochester(10k merit)
Vassar College

Still waiting on brown and yale. Not feeling that good about chances considering I got rejected from all my reach schools, but expected. Happy about Rochester and Vassar, praying that aid comes in at an amount that makes it an option. Already at to rule out Case and Lehigh for insufficient aid (both were asking 47k per year)

Congrats on Rochester and Vassar, both great options. Richmond is also a great school. Thanks for coming back and posting an update!
