I would like to say you have a perfect chance if you are not applying for FA. Brown rarely give international students FA. Your scores are fine since Brown does not give much weight on the scores.

^ You are wrong my mate. Brown is very generous on FA for international students… I have a slightly older data (shouldn’t have changed much in a couple of years) that says that Average financial aid from Brown to International students is $37,018…

I’ll come out of hiding to give my thoughts.

That average financial aid number is misleading. Since Brown is need-aware for international applicants, they may elect to not accept an international applicant who needs aid - what’s also needed for that stat to be relevant is the number of international students receiving aid, and probably the number of international students and the number of international applicants who applied for aid.

No one has perfect chances for Brown, since it depends on so many factors outside of one’s control. It’s also not that Brown doesn’t give much weight to scores (the distributions that used to be available on the admissions site but that seem to have disappeared with the site redesign support this). It’s just that they give a bit less weight to scores than many people seem to expect - other things can make them overlook low scores, and high scores are in no way a guarantee of acceptance. There is a correlation between higher scores and acceptance rate at Brown, but how strongly this implies causation is not clear.

“Low scorer” is not the right term, since those scores are perfectly respectable.

With that said, you’ll find that almost no current students give chances (not sure any will) because we don’t know. Your resume and stats are only a small portion of your application - there’s huge amounts of information that we don’t have that the admissions officers do, and we don’t even know what the officers are looking for exactly.

UPDATE- I have completed and am going to send abstract for my 3rd research -

“on generating rotational energy by mechanism based on creating a low pressure region surrounded by a high pressure region.(Energy by pressure differences)”
based on tornado and cyclones
by hindering normal convection cycle flow.

I assume that you are in the current cycle of applicants and have already finished your application. I’m not sure that an abstract of a third research project would really help. Remember that the admins are not engineers. Also note that Brown seems to be looking for engineering students who are “well rounded”, at least more so than some other schools. Currently the info you have portrayed above has some “rounding”. If you think this is an important achievement that reflects differently on you from what you have already sent in, or that your recommendation letters might have talked about, then maybe have something sent in, preferably not “directly” from you. Ie, an extra letter of recommendation from a research director or similar re upcoming publication of this research, or whatever would explain something new about you. Otherwise I think it may backfire. (Particularly if you write it in less than perfectly flawless English, which might make your lower writing score of more concern.)

Another thought: It isn’t clear exactly what you mean re the financial aid need. Does that mean that your family can pay ~35 K and need 20K of loans? or is the family portion including loans? I understand that depending on the country, family etc that getting loans for foreign students can be difficult, but US student packages may have significant loans expected. If you think you can handle and get loans of that range, without them coming from Brown you might want to consider “withdrawing your financial aid need”. (If you are an engineering major, you do have some reasonable expectation of being able to pay off those loans.)

I dont get what BrownAlumParent meant by that colleges want well rounded students
Do colleges look for students who are good at just everything or someone who excels at one field and is really focused about it.

My case-I know that I want to become an energy and web entrepreneur and I have done stuff revolving around my aim.

I have done Extra Curricular stuff as well but I dont aim to become an international level TT player or start my own band someday. My focus would always be mechanical engineering.

Is this attitude bad or an applicant who is “”""“WELL ROUNDED”""""" would have an advantage over me.
