What do you guys think my chances are for the following schools:

Washington University in St. Louis (Possibly ED)
University of Chicago
Macalester College
Reed College
Pomona College
Occidental College
Swarthmore College
Haverford College
Georgetown University
George Washington University
American University
Colorado College
New York University
Tampa Night School of Business in Lower Jesus Creek

Interesting to see another chess player, are you over 2000?

Your profile (numbers, ECs) looks fine (match) for Reed, but it's a "fit" school (e.g., interview is important, essays very important) so it's otherwise hard to say. An overnight visit is a must, IMO.

No, I am 1930, but it's going to be over 2000 soon; In a local round robin I have won 3/4 against all experts.

I would probably say you're a low reach for Chicago. You look like a diverse candidate in that not many other prospective students would have your interests or background. However, you still must prove that you are academically devoted. Students at Chicago tend to take academics to a whole new level, to the point of discussing academics incessantly, especially outside of class. (Of course, this is a generalization, and like all generalizations, it does not take into account the anomalies, which probably compose 1/3 of the student body.) In essence, to be safer, you should outline your personality, curiosity, nature of inquiry, etc. throughout your essays. Judging by the colleges you are seeking out, I have no doubt that you will come through with this. Chicago looks for students like you.

Thank you for your responses! I am very interested in economics and tax policy, so of course U of Chicago is high on my list. In other words, BUMP.

best public HS in maine? what school? [i'm a mainer as well so i'm curious to see your opinion]

GWU has a beautiful campus :)
good chance to all except for swarthmore and NYU.. your EC's are a little weak, but it's good that your interests are clear. you don't offer enough diversity to be considered very interesting though, i don't think.

I go to Yarmouth High School. I was putting NYU as easier to get into than a lot of the other schools here. My SATs are above their 25-75 percentile in everything but writing, and I think I could at least get into the Arts and Sciences (maybe not Stern.) Anyways, what do you guys think about EC diversity? I don't belong to a lot of clubs because I'm not passionate about them. I don't see how belonging to the Science Olympiad or Math team would help me at all, because I really don't care about them. On the other hand, I love chess and playmakers, and put all of my EC effort into them, which I feel is more valuable. What are some other opinions?

yarmouth .. i can see it as being one of the best, i guess. would not call it best hs overall in maine, though. that goes to mssm, hands down imo

it's not like NYU will just be looking at your SATs though. you definitely have a shot.. you're probably a slight reach there.
that's good that you haven't done activities that you aren't passionate about. you're definitely a talented chess player. you might want to explore a topic in your essay that still represents you but moves away from what they might expect based on your ECs.

I hadn't realized mssm was public. I guess that that is better in math and science at least, but as far as normal high schools go slash ones not in Limerick, I would say Yarmouth is that best. I'm at Wash U right now for discovery weekend, and I REALLY like it. I would love people to chance me for there because it's my number 1 right now.
