Chance a professor's son at Brown! I shall chance back.

Okay...so my dad is a PHYSICS professor there. Apparently, that makes by chances for admittance better than that of a normal-legacy (i.e. mother attended brown), but not as good as, say, being an under represented minority.

Intended Major(s):Classics, Film/Cinema studies, English (I have no interest in the maths or sciences, ironically).

GPA: 3.9 W, school doesn't send UW. They send my transcript, and if Brown did calculate the UW, it would be a 3.1-3.2. I know, it sucks.

SAT: 800CR 680M 750W (2 tries...is that not as good?)

EC: Currently strong, but probably nothing extroardinary. I might find an internship with a professor at brown, or shoot my own documentary.

Essays and Recommendations: good, but everyone thinks so

Ethnicity: Asian (Will this hurt me? I am applying for some non-stereotypical majors.)

Early descision for Brown

AP: APUSH this year, i think I got a 5. Lit, Lang, Macro, Micro, Biology next year.
My school doesn't offer that many AP's.

Yeah, I know, I wouldn't make the cut without the legacy.

Depends on a few things, but I think it’ll come down to one. Is your dad a significant professor? Because he’d get ****ed if they rejected you, and go over to teach at rival university otherwise.

Well, this a is a tough call. Since you’re Asian, then you’re competeing with highly accoladed and well-qualified applicants, but you are quite different from the Asian stereortype.

It’s funny how you’re dad is a PHYSICS professor and you hate math/science LOL  !!!
Anyway, your dad being a faculty member does help a lot, but it also depends on how prominent he is and possibly how long he has been there, if that makes sense. If he’s considered a valued asset, then your chances are fairly decent because they would be afraid to lose your father.

The SAT score is “alright,” but it would be nice to see the Math score be in the 700s (this proves that you’re more of the english/humanities/classics type). It’s also good that you’re trying to have a rigorous schedule, but the UW GPA is quite low.

I say that you have a decent chance if you apply ED because the family connection works in your advantage and you’re different from most Asians. I heard about a guy on CC who got into Brown with an 1860? SAT and whose father was a valued neuroscience professor-so there’s hope! ;)

BTW, what are your exact ECs? If they pertain to the intended major and you show a true passion, then you will seem very devoted, another plus. Filming a documentary plus an internship with a Brown professor makes you stand out! What about leadership? Best of Luck! :)

Could you chance me back, please?

I think you have a good shot. A lot depends on how many other professor’s kids are applying. Your father does have tenure, correct?

The good news is that I bet Brown has a policy of paying Brown tuition anywhere you go, so no worries about FA. IMO, if you really want to do film, Brown might not be the place–What about Tisch?

I thought you had great chances until I read your UW GPA. Decent chances with that in consideration.

You will be admitted if your dad is tenured.
