Chance a Senior Who Has No Idea What Her Chance Are!

Hey everyone!

I need a little help figuring out my chances at some schools! I would really appreciate it if you could help me out with my chances of being admitted/ where I should place it in my list as far as match/reach/safety etc. I haven't visited a lot of these schools with the exception of 2 so, if you've heard anything that may sway my decision or have any other suggestions that'd be lovely! Just keep it in the areas surrounding D.C and Maryland, Penn. and VA, please!

Stats, stats, stats!!!:
State: Maryland

GPA: 3.4-5-ish. I don't get my transcript back until next year... An upward trend is in there, I should add. I had a 2.6 freshman year (boo) and I've maintained a 3.7-ish since then (yay!)

SAT: Highest in 1 sitting: 1700 (W:630 M:470 CR: 600) Superscored: 1710 (W:640 M:460 CR: 590) No change really... taking it again in the fall and checking with schools for subject tests etc.

APs: US History: 3; English Lang.: 4, I'm taking 4 other APs senior year.

ECs: President of Film Club and I play softball (skipped junior season because of issues with coaching) . Ranked 29th in the nation for a national French test in took and I was nominated for the MD Princeton Book Award

I feel like I have a lot of hooks going my way too! I'll need a decent bit of financial aid though just to keep in mind if a school has a history of changing their decision because of that.

And now the schools! (and where I think I fit in. I feel like I'm off though.):

Reach:
William & Mary
George Washington
U of VA (I heard they can be a little pretentious over there. Is that true?)
U of Richmond

High Match:
U. of Delaware (OOS, so I'm not sure how they work on that front)
UMD: College Park
Florida State
U of Miami

Match:
UMD: Baltimore County
Towson
High Point
Ohio U

Argh! No safeties! and I feel like I have to apply to about 3 million other schools just to be safe. Haha. As you can tell. I'm in a little bit of a rough patch in my college search.

Thanks again!

I’m not that familiar with a lot of these schools but I know a lot about UMiami. You should really get your M+Cr to 1350. If you do this you’ll have an opportunity to get a good scholarship. Also, UVA is expensive for OOSTENDE and difficult to get in, raise the SATs! Good luck!

OOS and* sorry about that :/

Thank you! I’m definitely hoping to get my math to at least match my other scores. It’s too much of an outlier for me. UVA might be one to cross out of my list then. I think 3 reaches should be enough anyway especially since I already have W&M on there!

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Anyone on the east coast or familiar with these schools that has any idea what my chances could be? Please help!

Florida State - Reach OOS (13% acceptance rate or something like that OOS)
UMiami - Reach (They want 1900-2000+ SAT)

I would think FSU and Miami would be reach schools for you, no offense. I believe Miami is 38% acceptance rate. I would get that SAT to around a 1300-1350 for those reach schools. BTW how did you manage to get a 460 on the math? Math is almost always someone’s strongest subject, but it was your lowest by over 100 points. But, that can be fixable, you can get a tutor, or just review material for 30-45 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Math is easy to bring up, just refresh what you learned by purchasing a review book. Other than that, I would get some more Service hours, maybe some more EC’s, and you’d definitely get in to those reach schools.

No reason to apologize! I need honest opinions!

Math is really my weak point and on top of that I didn’t really focus as much as I should have in my freshman math class (part of the reason for my overall low GPA.). I think that holds me back a little bit since I don’t remember most of the stuff that things build on. It’s something I definitely have to work on.

Yeah, if you could work that Math up to a 600, that would be great for you.

Anyone else with ideas concerning the mid-atlantic schools/ High Point? Those are the schools I’m most likely to apply to/attend once I visit and start really weeding things out.

Also, if anyone would happen to have anymore matches and safeties that would be nice. Delaware is my favorite so far so keep that in mind. I liked the big campus environment, Main Street, the 5 week winter and summer sessions, the campus was beautiful, and everyone seemed genuinely nice!

A friend’s son is going to UMBC right now and he loves it, says there is a real sense of community on campus, excellent faculty, and the leadership is very dynamic. We hadn’t considered it for our son because he has said repeatedly that he wants a small LAC, however our friend’s son says that because 50% of UMBC students commute, there is a small-college feeling for the 50% on campus. So maybe we will reconsider!

Based on your credentials and your mention of financial aid help I think High Point is doable for you. Their standards are going up more and more each year, but if your GPA is 3.4 or above you should be fine. Also, your extra-curricular will help. HPU looks at full student not just numbers. That being said, HPU is very expensive. The only way our family could afford it was through the presidential scholarship program. This program is invite only and quite competitive. It is worth your time to apply to the program, but I do not know the standards the school uses to invite students. You may have a chance and it will help greatly.

Other schools in NC that I think are realistic for you are Elon, UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Charlottle, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Willmington. You may even want to look into Western Carolina and East Carolina.

Hope that helps!

For UVA and William and Mary you really need at least a 2100 SAT and a 3.8+ GPA(u). As an OOS student you should have even higher scores.

I would suggest you look at George Mason or James Madison for Virginia colleges.

Your reaches really are reaches and I would consider reducing their number ie William and Mary and esp UVA…Richmond can stay on in my opinion (I know someone with a 3.4 weighted and average SAT that got in, but had a hook) and perhaps finding different ones instead of UVA and William and Mary

OU is not a reach for you at all and considering its acceptance percentage, is more of a safety

You have a descent shot of getting into UD…but they are cracking down on the number of oos so that may hurt you in terms of admittance

Do you have any ideas about major down the line? …
