Ok just finished sophomore year and want to know if I even have a shot at these schools. Please be as honest as possible?

Internship over the summer at our county executive's office

I intend to major in public policy or political science (Would love to be an political strategist)

List of colleges:

UVA (dad went there, gives some money and is member of alumni association, app would count as in-state)

Hamilton

Tufts (mom went there and gives some money)

Georgetown

Franklin and Marshall

Macalester

Any others that you would suggest?

Please remember to be as honest as possible, thanks in advance

It is easier to chance you when you post SATs. Right now, I would recommend that you keep up your studies and continue to raise your GPA.

Even if your application counts as in-state at UVA, you still might want to have a Maryland school as a safety. UVA is tough on in-state kids. I had a student a few years ago whose four previous generations went to UVA. His dad was big in the alum association, too. He thought he would be a shoo-in, despite his 3.7 GPA. He got rejected.

thank you...anyone else?

Make sure you have at least 2 safety schools that you would actually attend on your list. You also need to add some good match schools.

i agree with greatescape: you need safety and good match schools, the ones on your list mostly sound like reaches. you have good ecs, so keep being committed to them.
try and get really good grades junior and senior year, and the colleges will like the upward trend. your gpa now isn't horrendous or anything either, but if you can raise it the next to years, that would be good.
like momreads said, it will be easier to give you better recommendations when you take the SATs.

thank you all, any other suggestions?

As a sophomore it's really hard to tell what you chances are since you haven't taken any SATs to reflect your comprehension. However, I do know that Tufts is looking for a 2100+ SAT (I'm an athlete so I know these things....) and isn't really lenient on it.

250 views and only 10 responces

I think you have a pretty good chance at Tufts, especially since "your mom gives money to them". Schools like those kinda people. Honestly, it's not fair for those not so afluent, but whatever.

Do my chances improve at UVA as well because my Dad is a member of the alumni association?

Your ECs are average, not great. Raise those grades a bit, do well on the SAT, and you should make it into UVa and Tufts.

by do well you mean 2050ish

Right, 2050 or over should do it.

thank you Smart Cookie
