Chance a student who hates the science section of the ACT and I'll return the favor!

Hi,
So I finally got my ACT scores back, as well as SAT II's. Here are a compilation of test scores:
ACT sitting 1: 32 English, 33 math, 34 CR, 30 Science, (32.25 composite, so effing close)
ACT sitting 2: 36 English, 34 math, 32 CR, 27 science (32.25 AGAIN)
Superscored though: 36 English, 34 math, 34 CR, 30 science (33.5 composite, or a 34 rounded!)
SAT I: Math: 710 CR: 750 Writing: 730
SAT II's: US History: 760 Bio M: 690 Lit:680 Math II: 680 (took the last 2 with no prep)

A bunch of the colleges I'm looking at superscore the ACT, most notably Amherst and WashU, while schools like Penn "take all scores into consideration"...do you think that my scores are good enough to get into my top schools (ie Penn, Amherst, WashU, Emory, Duke), or should I re-take ACTs/subject tests in September and October? Or is that overkill? I mean, a 34 superscored on the ACT is pretty good, but my best individual sittings are only 32's...thoughts?

any thoughts?

How the hell do you have a 4.1 UW GPA? 0.o As far as I know, unweighted means out of 4.0…
But anyways. Your test scores are solid, but your ECs look pretty weak to me. Do you have any significant school/state/national awards that make you stand out? I think you have little/no chances at UPenn and Yale, but most of the other places you listed seem to be reaches.

First of all, my test scores are in the range of UPenn and all the other schools, even on the higher end for those below UPenn…and many of them superscore the ACT also…my ECs are solid but I think you forget that because I play soccer year round and also run track, that means that every day I have a sport after school for the entire school year basically. The fact that I am president of a club and taking the most demanding possible course load (including 6 APs next year) makes it even harder…and if it helps me stand out, I lived two and a half years internationally in the Netherlands and am going to a summer medical program at UToronto this summer…

yo Matt, its Romir.

while you should take everyone’s considerations on this site into account, fuzzyfirebunny has a 2390 SAT score and an almost perfect GPA.

Her view will be from a different perspective, so take it with a grain of salt. No one truly knows your chances.

Here’s my two cents:

American University: IN (with a generous scholarship)
Carnegie Mellon University: IN
UPenn: i have no idea, but you are applying early so your chances go up. (talk to Markus Beissenger)
Washington University in St. Louis: most likely IN
Amherst College: i have no idea
Emory: IN
Georgetown: you need higher SAT II scores
Yale: i have no idea
Vanderbilt: IN
Johns Hopkins: most likely IN

you need more safety schools.

American University: definitely in (I have friends with much, much lower stats who got in)
Carnegie Mellon University: match
UPenn: low-reach; definitely a good chance
Washington University in St. Louis: I would say match but everyone at my school got rejected (even those who got into harvard, brown, princeton, and yale)
Amherst College: low reach
Emory: in
Georgetown: mid reach
Yale: high reach
Vanderbilt: in
Johns Hopkins: match

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735819-i-cant-believe-im-actually-doing-but.html</a></p>

haha romir wow didnt see that…yea agreed there…well amherst and WashU superscore the ACT, so I would have a 34 when I apply to those schools…I may not even apply to G-Town altho yea I kinda messed up those SAT II’s…I won’t submit them where I don’t have to because ACT plus writing substitutes for subject tests…

although at a first glance it seems like you havent really won anything, i was like wait… juggling act! yes if you play your juggling act to college apps (i can manage my team and be pretty beastly at everything) i feel like you can make all of your options between in and low reach (even upenn and yale). although your test scored are solid, i feel like riding simply on test scored wont get you where you want, instead they can supplement the fact that you play multiple sports, do volunteer work, and take a difficult course load
chance back? =)

@hisairness23:

Good to see an MJ fan. I will likely play the well-rounded card on my apps, don’t you worry ;)

DAMN. A 4.7 GPA… Impressive.

Please chance me:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735478-can-i-get-into-college-2-3-gpa.html</a></p>

Very solid GPA, and standardized test scores. Just out of curiosity, how do you get a 4.1 unweighted? I know some people that claim they get 5.28 weighted when 5.00 should be max…

Back on topic, you seem to spend lot of time on a varied set of extracirriculars. Do you think you can be more specific? From my knowledge, colleges would prefer that you show dedication to a few areas. 90 hours is generally a bit small compared to many applicants. When you say “sports!”, are you a major fan at recreational sports or someone that is very competitive and is even willing to play at the college varsity level?

UPenn: Probably in if ED, otherwise a bit iffy
Washington University in St. Louis: Probably in
Amherst College: Probably in
Emory: Most likely in
Georgetown: Good Chance
Yale: Chance
Vanderbilt: Most likely in
Johns Hopkins: Probably in

Please chance me back if you have the time, (I think you may find a similar characteristic for ACT scores with me) and good luck!
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/735950-please-chance-me-upenn-ed.html</a></p>

@AznKnight:
My school has an unweighted GPA scale where a >97 is an A+ and a 4.33, an A is from a 93 to 96 and a 4.0, A- is a 90-92 and a 3.67…etc…I am a varsity athlete in HS and could probably run or play soccer at some DIII schools…When I say sports is a big part of my life, it is my main EC just because I have at least 1 sport in every season (soccer year round, track in winter and spring)…I’m trying to become more specific (that is why I am going to a medical program at UToronto this summer haha) but I’m not entirely sure what I am interested in career-wise so I like to stay flexible…thanks for the opinions!

Any other thoughts?

colleges don’t give 4.33 for A+, or 3.67 for an A- either. A=4, b=3 etc. So recalculating that would give more accurate information.

yea from looking at yur stats besides gpa u should be in at all except yale penn and american. those 3 sound more like reaches for u
can u plz chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/736020-please-chance-rising-senior-8-colleges-4-ucs-4-privates-thanks.html#post1062801669</a></p>

well considering I have gotten only 4 B’s out of 48 total semester grades in my 3 years…that would give me a 3.92 under a traditional non-weighted GPA scale.

Average ACT scores + middle-low EC = average Chance. (even worse if ORM)

I mean seriously, nominated to youth forums? Who lists that? Everyone that scores over 200 on their PSAT gets a letter from at least 5 youth forums for [law/Medicine/Busines] leadership. NSHS is just an annual fee of 40$ and 100$ induction fee.

Reach for Ivies(especially Yale).
Average chance for everything else.

Yeah.

American University: Low match/safety.
Carnegie Mellon University: Match
UPenn: Reach, better chances if ED.
Washington University in St. Louis: Probably WL like everyone else… Be sure to show interest.
Amherst College: Reach
Emory: Match
Georgetown: Reach
Yale: High, high reach
Vanderbilt: High match/low reach
Johns Hopkins: Low reach

That’s how I see it. If you’re recruited or something your chances will obviously go up. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you get into Penn ED, though.

@CC’er
First of all, I am president of NSHS, so it certainly is not just paying a fee. And a 32 on the ACT is 99th percenticle according to the website…and superscored I have a 34…if it wasn’t for the science section, I would be in really great shape…and obviously this is a very raw form of my resume I likely won’t list nominations…

other thoughts?
