Essay:
Great- about my passion for sports and how that makes me a great match for Syracuse. Not 100% finished, but close. Currently geared towards Syracuse, but can be modified to fit other schools if I do not get in. If you want to take a look at it, please let me know :]

Recs (Syracuse reads EVERYTHING you send them):
Scoutmaster: Excellent
Boss at Yale: Excellent
Boss in Bridgeport: Excellent
Track Coach: Excellent
Buisness Teacher at HS: Excellent
Guidance Counselor: Great
Physics Teacher: OK

I have an interview for Syracuse in October. I am very good at interviewing so I should do very well there (not trying to sound overconfident. I've been told that after both internship interviews as well as my Eagle Scout Board of Review)

Things You Should Know:
-My boss in Bridgeport know the Head of Sport Management at Syracuse personally. He has put in multiple personal calls for me and seems upbeat about my chances.
-I met with the Head of Sport Management at Syracuse for over 2 hours during my visit. He told me he writes down a few names on a paper every year that he hands to admissions. These students may not have the best grades, but based on experience and passion he asks that if they are on the line they be pushed through. I assume I am on that list, I doubt he would tell me otherwise.
-I will be sending pieces of my work from Yale and Bridgeport to SU as well as pictures of my collection of sports memorabilia and other things that back up my passion for sports

Please give me your honest opinions and let me know if you have any other questions. I realize I don't match up to all the geniuses on here, but I'm hopeing my dedication to SU will help with admissions.

Anyone? I would chance back if someone wanted me to…

anyone have an opinion? 70 views and no replies…

do i have no chance at cuse? id appreciate a response, most of these schools are well known.

Sure, I’ll give you an opinion. Your SATs look good, your EC’s look good. Your GPA is a little low, for Syracuse, at least.

thanks! so how would you say that affects my chances? where do you think i stand vs. syracuse?

If your guidance counselor writes a good rec explaining your GPA and why it does not reflect your ability to be a good student in college I think you have a very good chance. Good Luck.

thanks tennis. i think the angle were going for is i was unmotivated years 1-3 because i wasnt interested. now im aceing my senior classes and have my dreams in sight.

can someone tell me which schools are reaches, matches, and safetys please. im just looking for some input

Just a thought–are you sure that’s the best angle to explain your poor GPA? Colleges might wonder why you were so uninterested, and if that could happen at their university.

Just wondering: are you putting a 2nd choice school at Syracuse? With ED, they will sometimes accept you into 2nd choice/non-binding

asha-im going to explain how after junior year it hit me that i should focus on my studies more and how important they were

rodney- my 2nd choice would be undecided (non binding) and transfer in a year…

but what do you guys think my chances are?

anyone know which are matches safety and reaches?

Have you plugged your stats into one of the college search websites? That helped me figure things out. I don’t know if we can mention other sites, but there are many to choose from which should give you a pretty good idea where you stand.

Looking up Syracuse’s stats at collegesearch.collegeboard.com, it shows that your SATs are just above the mid-point but your GPA is in the bottom 7%. Based on that alone I’d say your chances were pretty slim. Your experience and Eagle Scout accomplishments are outstanding. So that helps.

I think your essay could be a trap if you’re not careful. You only decided that school was important after finishing junior year! So you’re asking Syracuse to admit you as a student based on the two months of work you will have done before your ED application is due. In short, you’re asking them to act on faith that you mean it when you say you’re going to dedicate yourself to school when there is no evidence to support that claim. This is a problem. If anything it points to them deferring you to the RD pool.

Your best hopes lie in the recommendation of your boss in Bridgeport, your interviews with the Director of Sports Management at Syracuse and your upcoming interview with Admissions. Try to get the Director to send something to Admissions supporting your application. It’s too easy to say I’ll put in a good word and then just forget to do it.

Summing it all up I hate to say it, but I think your chances are 1 in 3 at best of getting admitted in the ED pool. My guess is you’ll be deferred to the regular pool. Hopefully I’m wrong and your chances are a bit better.

Here is the link to the college board, over there you can look up your other schools to see how you stack up.

Good Luck.

Thanks guys, I know the stats for all the school and where I stand in that sense, just looking for a couple opinions. Also, a big point I am making is showing how successful I have been when I applied myself (Scouts, Track, Senior Year, SATs, Internships) and that I have the ability to succeed in school.

I think you have an advantage with Syracuse because you will have an interview. I am in a similar situation, and I’m hoping the admissions people see how “busy” I was, and will overlook my GPA not being a 4.0. My big State U does not offer interviews. I have learned a little too late that GPA is the most important variable and everything else is gravy.

Good luck!

We are in the same boat slipjig. I am really hoping to impress at my interview, SU said they love to see students “bleed orange” so I’m going to make myself sounds as knowledgable about SU as possible. I did that in my essay as well.

anyone else?

anyone else? also i have an updated gpa and a weighted one. can you not edit threads on here?
