Chance a unique applicant for UCs :D

Great that I chose UCs eh? The one that doesn't look at ECs....anyhow...feel free to make suggestions to other schools

Note: This is for 2012, which is the year new standards are being set, making it harder for asians to get in P:

Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian
Location: California

UC GPA: 3.8W
Class Rank: 30%
SAT: 2220

Honors/AP Classes:

9th: Honors English, Honors Geometry, Honors History
10th: Honors English, Honors Alg 2, AP World
11th: Honors PreCalc, AP Bio, AP Chem (pink slips resulted in scheduling errors for me...so...lack of APs)
12th: AP Calc BC, AP Gov, AP Macroecon, AP Comp Sci, AP Stats

ECs:

-CEO of online businesses
-Several websites and startups
-Ebay business
-Make thousands a year from the above :D
-Wall Street Survivor (stock market stimulation) - made tens of thousands off that (possibly 6 figures of...fake money :D)
-Real Stock Market - probably not including this, since I borrowed my parent's money. Results about the same as above
-Chief Technology Officer/Possibly Secretary of Science/Team Leader for Science For Youth (organization teaching kids science - seminars usually have 50+ people attending)
-Varsity Track 4 years
-California Scholarship Federation (no special position)

*class rank is a bit... strange at our school. the majority in the top 10% are those who have never taken a single honors or ap in their lives... some even take classes lower than the regular level o-o; still, no excuse for my poor rank. i slacked off and it's pretty evident

Schools:

UC Berkely
UCLA - applying business
UCSD - applying compsci
UC Irvine
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara

ahem and maybe chance me for WashU ED?

Double legacy at WashU - will apply for olin

Thanks :)

with those ECs and SAT score, I feel you have a great chance into all those schools. maybe even higher, you should have considered Ivies.

Thanks airplaneman  I would but my rank kills my chances

not to mention my weighted cumulative gpa is a 3.6/3.7 including freshman year - probably a 3.65/3.7 :/

I also started a business in my sophomore year and made a considerable sum of money, had very similiar SATs (2240).

However, UCs being public schools weigh GPA over test scores and your GPA is very weak. Berkeley and LA are reaches, UCSD is a low reach, the rest are matches.

How are your subject tests?

meteman -

haven’t taken my subject tests, but honestly I think they’ll be 750-800 depending on what kind of day i’m having. fairly confident about those

As meteman said, that unweighted GPA is your Achilles’ heel, primarily for LA and Berkeley. However, your committed ECs and solid SAT score will considerably boost your chances of acceptance at those schools.

In my opinion, Berkeley and LA are low reaches, SD is a match, and the other UCs are safeties.

haha… i have achilles tendonitis  <- random fact.

But anyhow, ahh. I really hope to go to UCLA, it’s pretty much a dream school. I’m one of those high gpa/low sat-ers that they hate though =/

Yea I’m guessing my UC unweighted is going to be around a 3.5…possibly lower =/ Unlike other schools, our school doesn’t offer honors chemistry and honors physics, which are UC weighted though… so relative to the school, my gpa isn’t too bad for an honors/ap kid…still terrible though

bump  will chance back

Your EC’s are spectacular. I’m pretty sure you would make ivies…

Haha the replies are so mixed…but I’m more pessimistic about my class rank so…

Any other opinions? I’m completely lost.

Wow, your stats are great, I think that you have a pretty good chance at all of those schools

Haha thanks :)

Bleh these mixed responses are so confusing P:

hmmm anyone else? o-o

Your class ranking is very weak.
Tough chances.

Found out Ucs disregard rank - but they see the school profile

In reality my rank is higher because of my courses - top 10% high so :)

I feel so relieved that they don’t see rank.

In reality my rank is higher because of my courses - top 10% high so
^Your counselor should try to mention that.

Other than that, you look great.

I can get my counselor to write that the others are taking weak classes? that’s some more relief there - thanks I’ll be sure to ask!

But assuming he doesn’t, what are my chances since they don’t see rank at all?

Your chances are still strong.
UCs developed a new system. They do not require any recommendations anymore.
Your rank is weak, but since UCs do not really care about them, I think your chances are great.

New system? No rec letters? Really? I thought the only thing that changed was no more SAT IIs

Hmm I hope you’re right :slight_smile: UCLA would be a dream. But Cornell, WashU, and other reaches would be a nice dream too ^^;
