UC chances + a few others :)

I know, I know, my title was so unique and attention-grabbing that you just had to click it.
Just kidding :) anyway..

Stats:
White female at one of the most competitive public non-magnet schools in CA (140 kids out of 400 kids are attending ucsd, ucla, and uc berkeley this fall. And I’m sure there were more who got accepted and chose to go somewhere else like MIT Stanford Harvard Yale).
top 25% out of 400 -> school doesn’t rank based on weighted GPA. I don't think ranking should be a problem though because it doesn't show that I'm stupid, just that there's so many smart people at my school :P

UCSD: safe match - safety
UC Irvine: safety
UC Santa Barbara: safety
USC: match - safe match

Not being in the top 10% hurts a bit, but the fact that your school is competitive will help. The UC GPA is very slightly weak for the top UCs, and the ECs are average to slightly weak, as it'd be better if you had more leadership positions. The honors/awards don't help to make you stand out. How have people like you (from your school) fared in the past?

pretty well, almost everyone goes to UCs. of last year's class, 50-60 went to berkeley, 30 went to LA, and 70-80 went to ucsd. and that class wasn't exactly the smartest... :P at my school, the class of 08 is definitely the most competitive right now.

bump? anyone else?

in at all??

Well, I mean, specifically those like you, in GPA, SAT, etc. (given that your school releases that info -- I know other competitive schools do).

I would agree with KyleDavid except to say that I think he underestimates the difficulty of gaining admittance to UCSD. In recent years (past two, anyway), admittance rates for top students at UCB, UCLA and UCSD have been very comparable.

I think she's a match at Cal and UCLA. Her UC GPA is nearly on par and her test scores 2300 is more than enough to "compensate". I agree with kyle on the lack of leadership positions, but still the UCs heavily weight GPA and test scores

thanks everyone...any more chances?
btw, i'm not sure if my school releases the information or not.

is being an ap scholar a big deal?

i don't think being an ap scholar is a big deal. it's the lowest level of ap scholar awards. :P

just wondering because i got the same award :) it must be some sort of deal...:)

haha well, it's good cause you can put it on your app. it basically means that you passed 3 ap exams :P

bump...i talked to my counselor today and realized that i calculated my uc gpa incorrectly. it should actually be 4.21. so can i get some more chances/advice please? :)

I think many overestimate the difficulty of gaining admission to UCSD. For example, UCSD admits ~90% of ELC students, whereas Berkeley/UCLA admit 50-something percent. Big difference.

Berkeley's and UCLA's were in the low 20s; UCSD's is in the 40s. How is that "very comparable"? (Not that admit rate really means a whole lot as to the selectivity.)

I would say GPA is "heavily weighted," as it's judged "very important," whereas Berkeley considers scores and ECs (and in turn leadership) "important."

I stand corrected on the admission rates, KyleDavid. I was misled by stories of folks who were turn-downs at UCSD but accepted at UCLA. What are "ELC" students?

the people who were rejected from sd and accepted to la probably had low gpas and test scores but great extracurriculars/essays. cause sd chooses applicants based on a point system while la looks at each person holistically.

anyway, any more chances with the 4.21 gpa?

"Berkeley's and UCLA's were in the low 20s; UCSD's is in the 40s. How is that "very comparable"? (Not that admit rate really means a whole lot as to the selectivity.)"

Actually over the past 5 or 6 years, UCSD's admit rates are usually in the high 30's and low 40's percent. only once in this time was it in the mid 40's for UCSD. around 40% is usually the average give or take a point. UCLA however, is around 23-24% this year, but actually is not usually in the low 20's but more like the mid 20's. so saying UCLA is usually in the low 20's and UCSD is usually in the 40's isnt exactly correct. Its more like UCLA is usually in the mid 20's and UCSD is in the low 40's. this year i believe UCSD was 41% and UCLA was 23%, but looking at the averages over the past 5 or 10 years i would say ucla is around the mid 20's while ucsd is in the low 40's. the rest of the UC's are usually in the high 50's or low 60's and higher. anyhow, admissions averages between the two schools are not far appart, i believe less than a 50 point SAT average difference (out of 2400) and gpa averages for admits around 4.06 for UCSD and 4.13 for UCLA. I know plenty of people with well over 4.0's and 2000 SAT who have been denied to both UCSD and UCLA. I have attended both schools and the student body quality is very very similar. You are correct though that for ELC UCLA is significantly tougher to get into. However, UCSD and UC Berkeley have 99% of their freshmen class in the top 10% of their high school class, while UCLA has a slightly lower number 97%.

Do you go to Mission by any chance??
