So, I am applying to the following schools for business:

--

--

Situation: Father died very unexpectedly (10 hours after being released as healthy from a hospital) and this was before my freshman year. My mother went into severe depression. My freshman year was bad, 80% average, and it's been going up 3-4 % per year.

I own a profitable five figure business, two patent pending apps, and I manage all taxes, legal, fiscal, and credit related matters along with some programming. I have a business partner. Company has merchant accounts, is registered, etc. Don't really want to go too deep to bore people, but any questions can be PMed.

My essay is about overcoming my fathers death and opening a business, what I learned and how this shaped my personality.

Please excuse any errors in my writing, submitting via iPhone app.

:) Thanks!

Family death essay won’t be a big hook, but the business is nice.

Sounds like you have an amazing story to tell! GPA is the one bottleneck, but you seem to have obviously overcome the circumstances.

Write a great essay, and the numbers aside from the GPA will speak for themselves. I’d say nearly shoe-in for all except NYU and Emory (those are a toss up, but you’re definitely in the top quartile of applicants).

Your business will work wonders for you. I would appreciate a PM w/ more detail, it sounds very interesting.

Good luck!

EDIT: Really though, you could aim higher. Just saying, have some reaches.

Thanks :)

Sure, what kind of details? PM me.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Also, I know the death thing isn’t a good topic/hook, it’s just a sentence or two about my “background”, per se.

Bump 10char

Bump. Anything :)?

Something…please :(?

Your GPA is a little low for some of the schools on your list, but you have a very reasonable explaination for it in my opinion … You look well qualified otherwise! Good luck!!

I agree - if your essays are thoughtful and well done, you should be able to express the perseverance you’ve had through what sounds like a terrible trial. Let me know if you want an extra pair of eyes to see if you’re hitting the right tone.

Also, can you arrange interviews at these schools? An admissions counselor is really the person you want to tell your story to, face-to-face. That would go a long way in mitigating the GPA factor.

Good luck! (Though it sounds like you don’t need it)

The only thing I can say is to avoid the “woe Is me” essay and focus on how your father’s death influenced your outlook on the future.

Thanks guys :)

@EsotericalApp- not planning to do this, no. More mentioning how I overcame a tragedy in my life.

@Galavantian - NYU doesn’t do interviews. I’ll do the rest/schedule. I will let you know about my essay for sure

:)

Bump :)----

Bump again :)—

Anyone?:(-
