GPA: 3.9 (sophomore year I had a short emo, depression period after my Senior Smiles friend died suddenly).
SAT: 1950
SAT IIs: Taking 3 in June
EC: Chess club VP, in senior smiles program for 4 years with 500 + hrs (but only 200 were recorded in highschool) which I quit after my friend died, volunteering at a science center/museum, principal french horn player at the top band for 3 years (also play 5 other instruments for several years), Link leader program (basically we help the freshmen get settled into the highschool life).

Any chance for schools like UCLA? UCSD? UCI? UCB?

any help would be great ^_^

Get fully out of the emo phase and rejoin what you gave up. Do not talk about your friend’s death in your essay (college admissions officers and depressed applicants do NOT go well together)–if you would like, write about how that friend may have inspired you, changed your perspective.

GPA is good. SAT needs to shoot up by 150 points: 50 points across each section on average, which is not too bad, if taking it by parts. Memorize math formulas and grammar rules and practice them. For CR, understand the thinking behind passages. And of course, practice your essay writing (but with a 3.9 GPA, I assume you may be a semi-decent writer at least).

Your “emo” quality can be converted into a sensitive perspective. Try to show that, as in your love for music, interest in the scientific world, etc. Get teachers who can understand you well and can really draw out your best qualities–what makes you stand out from the other applicants. If only two teachers in your junior year can do this, that’s all you need.

UCLA, maybe
USCD, a slightly, very slightly more positive maybe
UCI, UCB, more positive maybe

GOOD LUCK! :)

Thank you for replying ^_^, and that emo period only lasted for a little bit. It kinda brought my GPA down from like a would be 4.2. Just that it was my first close friend/someone I knew dying right in front of me and I got kind of “shocked”. He inspired me to go into the medical field and become a surgeon!

And I’m trying to increase my gpa to around a 4.0 right now with the second semester (I have 4 weighted classes this year) and hopefully that will go well xD

I really hope I can get into those schools > <

^bump, anyone else chance plz :3

^bump, anymore? plzz > <

So the UCs have been extremely strange with acceptances and rejections this year. They’ve waitlisted and rejected a LOT of people from mid-tier UCs that should have gotten in with stats similar to yours. So really, you’re at a disadvantage here, but since your GPA/SAT are high enough to meet or exceed the averages at most UCs, I’d say you should get into at least several of them.

UCLA: Big reach (Based mostly on your SAT score)
UCSD: Reach
UCI: Match
UCB: Big reach

Also consider UCSB, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, etc.
