Chance an Average Student for Macaulay Honors!

White male, average income ~80,000. Born and raised in upstate New York, so I figure CUNY will appreciate that.

GPA, UW: 89.5. W: 93.5

SAT: 1950 (CR: 700 W: 700 M: 550)

EC's:

Drama Club member (four years), takes up several hundred hours a year, can be up to 60 hours a week on "Hell weeks". I've received many leads and solos. Will be serving in office for senior year (as either President or VP).

NYSSMA Solo (Vocal Performance): Will receive either a high 90's or a 100 for a level six (highest level) piece.

All County Choir

All State Choir

Literary Magazine (Have had stories published/Editor for magazine in grades 10-12)

School Cabaret performance, served as a waiter and a performer for grades 10-12

National Honor Society member.

Tutor for a middle school student, twice a week for two years. Adds up to...a lot of hours.

Have had short stories published by a professional publishing company.

Scored a 100 on English Regents Examination (A state examination that was modified the year after I took it due to difficulty.)

My recommendations will be excellent, one coming from my accelerated English teacher, in whose class I scored a 105. Another will be from my choir director, who I've been great friends with since the beginning.

My essay will concern when I became a Christian, and how I had to deal with the accusations and mockery my best friend gave me.

I've taken accelerated and AP courses, and will be taking almost all AP courses in Senior year.

Now, my major downfall is this. While my resume looks decent from this, my transcript has a couple of C's on it, even a D. I have enormous trouble with mathematics and some sciences (though the sciences are nearly as much of a problem). I figure I'll be able to address this problem if I go in for an interview, which I plan on doing.

So I'm asking for my chances at the Macaulay Honors College at CUNY Hunter. Perhaps you can chance me for NYU as well, if you feel it's appropriate, or any other befitting NYC college that comes to mind.

Thanks!

Helloo? D:

I would say you have a fighting chance with your current stats. Your Math SAT score, however, is below par; it should be at least >630. You sound like a well-rounded student, but please, do bring up your Math score. Best of luck.

ps- I am student at Macaulay Hunter.

Thanks so much, I’m trying hard to do just that.

Idk, Hunter’s emphasis is on the sciences. It is also really competitive. btw, Queens and Brooklyn are better for liberal arts and arts in general. Easier to get into, as well.

Well, your ECs give you a fighting chance, but mac hunter is a high/mid reach because of your grades. Don’t get me wrong; if your essays and recs are amazing, you have a chance. It’s not impossible. I know people who’ve gotten accepted with ~87, 88 gpas.

It really DOES matter what you put down as your intended major, so play to your strengths!
