Hi all. I am a rising senior and would appreciate it if you guys would take your time out to chance me.

my stats are as follows
Ethnicity - Asian American
GPA - 3.65 unweighted, 4.1 weighted
SAT - 2120
SAT II - 770 USH,
760 World History
660 Literature
4 AP's by the end of senior year.

I have 100+ hours of volunteering and internships at local hospitals, and decent EC's. (state awards, clubs, and a two or three leadership positions)
However, I am not much of an athlete, and have just 2 years of Varsity tennis and one year of football.

Schools:
UNC (oos , applying EA)
UVA(oos)
University of South Carolina (in-state)
University of Florida (oos)
Emory (applying ED here)
UGA (oos)
NYU
University of Wisconsin (oos)

PS: I have one question as well, If i don't get into a school via Early Action (such as UNC), am i automatically put into the regular decision pool? Thanks!

To answer your question, if you apply to a school via Early Action you will either get accepted, denied, or deferred( put into regular decision pool ). I think the only thing that is holding you back from being a really competitivie applicant is your GPA. Maybe you should write short paragraph explaining your low GPA.

First of all, 2120 isn’t really average for most of those schools. Only at Emory is that average in which case an average person (no matter the ethnicity) has a reasonable chance in ED (in fact being average, may benefit you as you may be at the higher end of applicants in ED). I would not waste time explaining your GPA if your course schedule was rigorous. Your SAT subject scores indicate your competence (I suppose you could have used more APs, but you’ll be judged favorably if it is discovered that your school doesn’t have that many). If you want to get into Emory, you better simply write an essay indicating that you actually know something about the institution and that you actually want to come (of course, ED kind of tells that). Also, Emory does not care about your athleticism (it is obviously one of the only schools on your list that can really care less about sports in general), it’s more about your character and academic achievement. As a school that doesn’t recruit, it doesn’t really value certain talents over others. I’m sure that, regardless of whether the others have a huge sports scene or not, they could care less as well. They only care that you have a talent or character on top of academic prep.

Unless he’s got autism or something there’s no reason to explain GPA because if I was an admissions officer I’d brush that aside as just a pitiful excuse.

For Emory, show a LOT of interest. Email the admissions officers. Visit. Order their DVD.

The supplement (not this years but it’ll be similar anyway). Do as much as what the checklist towards the bottom asks as you can.

I’m applying to Emory this year with a similar GPA (though with a much harder schedule) and I’m trying to visit campus, attend a college fair, etc, since it’s one of my top schools.

UNC (oos , applying EA)-high match
UVA(oos)-high match
University of South Carolina (in-state)-in
University of Florida (oos)-in
Emory (applying ED here)-low reach
UGA (oos)-in
NYU-low reach
University of Wisconsin (oos)-in

You know the gpa is holding you back but you have a good shot so I wish you luck.

The only schools I could see you having difficult getting into would be NYU and Emory. Your ECs are solid, your SATs are good and I’m guessing you could raise them. The rest of the schools are matches and you’d definitely get into the lower tier ones.

Like everyone has said, if you can raise your gpa this year, then you should be a shoo-in for all except NYU and emory, where I would say you’re a reach. Things happen though, and you should still apply, and definitely EA to Emory.

As far as your ECs go, you have plenty of time invested in them, so it shouldn’t matter that you don’t have many sports. Athletics aren’t a huge part of the campus at any of your schools (except for UNC) anyway.

UNC (oos , applying EA)- high match
UVA(oos) high match
University of South Carolina (in-state)- match
University of Florida (oos)-match
Emory (applying ED here)- reach
UGA (oos)- match
NYU- hmm… I’ll give it a low reach
University of Wisconsin (oos)- match

Emory and NYU are the only slight reaches. The gpa is a little lower than I’d like it to be, but your sports involvement and leadership should help. You have a good, spread-out school choice. I wish you luck as a fellow rising senior.
