Do I have a realistic chance at any of these schools or should I not waste a couple hundred bucks?

Go for it! Most people here don’t recognize how much being an eagle scout influences a person. (says an Eagle) If you could get strong recommendations and write good essays, you have a shot.

I think Eagle Scout is a great EC, but in my experience it is not a stand out EC for ivy level schools. Between that and rank ( from a non feeder school, they’d want you to be Val or sal), I see HYP as unlikely.

Cornell and Duke look like realistic reaches, and being from Indiana should help at those schools.

@2college2colleg: I know my rank sucks, but my school is technically unranked so maybe it will help, but I never had any real expectations of getting in

@bernie: I wouldn’t say that, my MIT interviewer was quite impressed with my scouting experiences.

I’m not a ■■■■■. Eagle scout people almost always are so pretentious about their accomplishment when it is really nothing it requires no like intensive merit

I will post this here, because I think people might look at this to see how much being an Eagle Scout might help. The real answer is that nobody knows, but I think there are some misunderstandings about it (as evidenced by what BernieMadoff wrote).

Eagle Scout is a pretty big deal–it requires a lot of work, commitment, and leadership. It takes a lot of time. However, it is important to note that it is not an academic achievement. Boys of all levels of academic ability achieve the rank. But I think it’s a very good EC, because of the level of leadership and community service it shows.

So will being an Eagle Scout help you get into a selective school? Maybe. But I will tell you for certain that the skills you learned and the personal character traits you strengthened on the way to getting that rank will help you immensely at whatever college you eventually attend.
