I plan on applying early decision to Wash U, which I have visited twice (once for a tour, another for a 3-day Discovery Weekend) and have interviewed at. I'm including this information mainly because I've heard that interest matters a LOT to them, but I could be wrong about that.

I plan to major in English (or something related), and I've had straight-A's in that subject all throughout high school.

Newspaper Practicum and Band are the only classes I have taken that were not either accelerated or AP.

*Wash U superscores the ACT, so the scores given are taken from 2 tests. On one, I got a composite of 33. On the other, my composite was 34.

**My school's newspaper last year won a Golden Eagle Award (best overall school newspaper in my region) and a Best-In-Class Designation from my region's scholastic press association.

bumping this…

If it wasn’t for your GPA I’d say you had a good shot. Yours is really going to hurt. Good Luck

gpa’s bringing you down, maybe need some more leadership positions for EC’s…your test scores, rank, and rigor are what give you a shot; with strong essays/recs you could go for it but if you have a similar-ish college you really like that’s one step down i suggest using ED for that

I know that my GPA is going to hurt me in admissions anyway, but I was wondering-- how do colleges standardize GPA when each school seems to do it differently? I have roughly a 3.4 unweighted, but I’m still in the top 7% of my class. Will that be taken into account at all?

The only GPA that matters is unweighted. It removes any guesswork for them. The top schools seem to frown on lowish GPA.Your others stats are very good but the competition is tough.

Wash U definitely looks at class rigor.
