Chance an Indian applicant for HYPSM, Cornell, Penn, Duke, UChicago, Berkeley

Yes he did and got rejected with perfect stats (36.0 ACT, 240 PSAT, dual 800 SAT IIs, ranked #1 in a class of 400, 5’s in six major math/science APs). He also had “my best student ever” recommendations. But his ECs were regional, not national, he is a 3-year graduate rather than the usual 4 (less time to develop more ECs) and we didn’t have the contacts or knowledge early enough to get him into a position to co-author peer-reviewed papers or join nationally competitive math and science teams.

He also applied via a program called Questbridge for low-income families that implied he’d need close to a free ride, yet he wasn’t female, a minority, or a first-generation college student, the groups that MIT prioritizes space for.

But a lot of people with perfect or near-perfect stats got turned down, based on the CC posts I saw; they all deserved admission. My son knew that he was taking a big risk in trying to both graduate in 3 years AND apply to the most elite schools. I’m happy the risk paid off for him, even if it may have cost him MIT. If he gets any of those other acceptances (and I expect he’ll get a couple), it will be tough enough to make a final decision in only 30 days.

Congratulations on you making the MIT waitlist, you must have had something especially exciting on your list of EC accomplishments! Which school looks the most promising to you from a quality + financial aid combination?

UChicago - Wait-list

Harvey Mudd College (Full FA) - Admit

UC Berkeley - Admit

Needless to say, I’m very happy.

@LoremIpsum

As of now, HMC looks the brightest. :)

Any update on your son’s colleges?

Any rejections yet OP?

UPDATE:

ACCEPTED: Penn, Yale, Princeton, Duke

Rejected: Cornell, Stanford, Dartmouth, Brown, Swarthmore

Wait-listed: Columbia

:)

Attending: Yale. :)

The only lesson I learnt — US College admissions are weird.

Exactly backwards from you: rejected from Princeton and Yale and accepted to Brown. But Brown is being nice enough to buy him an airplane ticket to come out and see the school before he makes his final decision.

Congratulations on a major success!

Wow! I love Brown! I’d exchange it for Yale anyday. But alas, everything happens for a reason. Maybe I’ll be better off at Yale.

Congratulations on your son’s success! Choosing b/w Amherst, Williams and Brown is not easy. (Though I’d definitely go for Brown.)

hi OP, congrats on your admits as they are very impressive. by the way what will you be studying at yale?

please chance me

The Yale brand name will serve you better if you decide to work the international markets. At least neither of us are seriously considering UIUC anymore!

The only case where Int. Applicants have better chances than Americans of the same ethnicity is when the Int. applicant is Asian.
Your SAT is on the lower end, so improve that.

Super jealous of you for Yale, congrats. Do you think it was your ECs that did it?

To what purpose? Yale has already said yes!

I used to never get when people said, my essays got me in. But now I know what the meant. :)

Haha, yes. Yale likes me!

SAT scores, I believe, are important, but not as much as CCers believe them to be. Many people from my country with MUCH higher scores than me, got rejected at almost all of their reach schools.

@LoremIpsum, so which school is your son finally attending?

Haha, you almost had me believe that I won’t make to UIUC :p

Oh well, all’s well that ends well! :)

Well, it looks like you didn’t make it to UIUC after all?

In all honesty, your SAT/SATII numbers were somewhat low and you got in almost certainly due to extracurriculars. It’s always tough to gauge the value of ECs here on CC since a lot of posters turn small school-wide achievements into monster accomplishments; working under another system made evaluating such ECs doubly hard.

I must confess that I, too, underestimated the important of ECs; fortunately, my son had done enough in his shorten early-graduation high school years to also impress at least some of the admissions committees.

You’re now officially a kid going places; maybe it’s time to take on a more positive ID than SoHopeless?

He was undecided but leaning toward Brown over the weekend. He’s actually at Brown right now for both a general presentation and a math/science one – if he really enjoyed himself during this first visit, he may be sold on them. He still has a few weeks to make a final decision.
