Chance an unspectacular asian

@PSC2IVY‌ Well, it seems like the OP doesn’t have a problem with the comment I made. So apparently, he is okay :)

But you’re not getting the point. What if he wasn’t okay? It’s just a safe rule of thumb not to call you people “kid”. Sure, he didn’t get upset, well actually he hasn’t responded but that’s besides the point, but it also offended me a little. :-/

Calling someone a kid is really a big deal now? If it wasn’t meant condescendingly (and didn’t appear to be), I don’t see the issue, and calling someone out on it isn’t really all that much better. (Just my two cents, as a minor who doesn’t really care about being called kid or not  )

I don’t mind being called a kid, really! As AnnieBeats said I’m a minor. I can see how that could be offensive to you though PSC2IVY, being a college transfer so no longer a minor.

Also I don’t have confidence issues. I’m just a realistic guy, and to the schools I’m applying to, I’m an “unspectacular asian”. I didn’t say average- Unspectacular. Well, that GPA is spectacularly low.

@PSC2IVY‌ No I’m not in-state for Umichigan, I wish I was! And I am looking at NYU, although I heard Stern has much higher standards than other NYU schools.

@4kidsdad‌ I don’t even know what Naviance is. I’m looking that up, I hope I actually can see other people’s GPA who got in that would help a lot!

Thanks for the comments guys keep them coming!

Edit:

@scholarme‌ Yes I am. I don’t feel ashamed to be Asian American, even if that does count a little against me.

chance me while I chance you- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1670747-improving-chances.html#latest

So the upward tred from 10th to 11th is great. Did you have any from 9th to 10th? Like B- in 9th and B+ in 10th? ACT is great
Wash U St Louis - low reach
U michigan - high match
Northwestern - high reach
Uchicago - high reach
USC - high match
Swarthmore - low reach

I haven’t ever had a B-, but 9th and 10th grade grades were almost identical. I didn’t figure out how to be a student until 11th grade, and now it might be too little too late :(.

It’s never too late. By the way, I am a minor. Started community college at 16 and I’m turning 18 in a couple of weeks so yeah.

NYU stern Reach
U michigan match
Northwestern low reach
Uchicago reach
USC mid high reach (because the school of business is one of the most popular/ the best in the country)

Your test scores are remarkable but your GPA shows a whole other story. It would be easier if you listed your ECs because they are important to most of these schools. It doesn’t matter if they apply to your college/major all they are supposed to do is show that you have a passion for something. I would add some more safety schools just in case.

@Maui08‌

Yeah I have some safeties in mind but I really would like to go to any of these schools haha (esp. stern). Is 3.3 really that bad :frowning: I knew it would hurt me but didn’t think it’d kill me

The title makes me so sad! No matter what happens, remember you are spectacular and very accomplished!

I’m not trying to draw pity, although your nice words are appreciated! Again I’m not crying or being falsely humble, I like to think I have a realistic notion of where I stand, although apparently I might be wrong (GPA hurts me more than I thought :()

bump

Swarthmore: Reach
WUSTL: Reach
UChicago: Reach
NWU: Reach
NYU Stern: High match
UMI: Reach
USC: High match

GPA (along with other factors) does matter a lot for top schools. It would be very hard to make up the difference when it is severely below the mid 50 as statistics showed. UMich also put pretty high weight on GPA and 3.3 is certainly too low for it (average 3.85 for admission). In addition, Ross preadmision at UMich is even more competitive. Your ACT score is right at the 75% while SAT score is below the 75%. Assuming you are from out of state, UMich would be a reach for you evening for LSA mainly due to the low GPA unless the low GPA is typical for your high school and your class rank is higher than it appeared.

I pretty much agree with Catria above except for USC. If you means U of S California, it is a reach for you too.

@dreamer1997, one silly question–you said you are at a HADES school which means you have access to fantastic college guidance with folks who know the process in and out. Why on earth are you asking a bunch of HS students about your chances of admission??

@‌sudsie

Because CC is known for its well-informed members and extra opinions are always good. I’m sure I’m not the only one with access to good college counseling who still posts questions on these boards.

my friend got into stanford with 33 act, but 800s on all subject tests. no clubs, only played soccer 4 years. won a few science fairs, regional and i think state. idk… id say nothing is impossible. have a great essay. it helps more than you think it will. please chance me back if you can! thanks!

@dreamer1997: as others have pointed out, your major weakness is the low GPA in grades 9/10. The upward trend will make up for it, but as an Asian male, you will definitely be dinged for it. The rest of your ECs appear pretty standard to me. I suggest to emphasize more your work experience, as this seems pretty interesting to me.

If you can re-take your SAT I and improve your reading score, this will be more influential than retaking the ACT. Your 34 ACT reading score seems to indicate you can get higher than 700 on SATI Reading.

How did you self-study for AP courses? Was it part of CTY?

@dreamer1997: I didn’t realize you were at a boarding school. In this case the low GPA in grades 9/10 may be overlooked. Is there anyway you can get your GC at your school to mention this in the letter? Do you have an explanation for the low grades?
