Updated Chances for the strange Asian

So my previous post at the end of March has disappeared... So I guess I'll just make it more concise + updated. I'll start by saying I'm not the typical Asian applicant. I'm a rising senior.

Objective:
UW GPA: 3.421
W GPA: 3.842
UC GPA: 4.083
Class Rank: School doesn't rank
Highest one-sitting SAT: 2220/1480 (700 M, 780 CR, 740 Writing)
Superscore SAT: 2280/1480 (700 M, 780 CR, 800 Writing)
SAT II: They're terrible, and I plan on retaking but for now: 670 Math II, 610 Chem
APs: [ul][]Junior year - AP Physics C, AP Biology, AP Japanese, AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB
[]Senior year - AP Econ, AP Chemistry, APCS (?), AP English (?)[/ul]
AP Scores: [ul][]AP Physics C: Mechanics - 2 []AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism - 2 []AP Biology - 3 []AP Statistics - 3 []AP Calculus AB - 4[/ul]
Senior year schedule:[ul][li]AP Econ []AP Chemistry []AP English []AP Comp Sci []Differential Equations/Linear Algebra []Japanese TA[/ul][/li]* I may be able to petition when the school year starts to get into AP English; for now I'm in Honors - I want to do AP though. For APCS, I may not take the class anymore. I may retake the equivalent of AP Physics C at the local community college instead to get credit for physics.

Income bracket: 150k before taxes. My sister is in college at Stanford; we pay ~$30,000.

Demographical Info: [ul][]Ethnicity: Japanese []Residence: California [li]Gender: Female[/ul][/li]I think that's it for Objective?

Subjective

Reason for Low GPA/why I'm a strange Asian: For freshman/sophomore years, I had depression. For junior year, I found out I had slightly autistic tendencies and a learning disorder - not otherwise specified. I had always found socializing and approaching teachers to be a huge challenge. I now have an IEP; however due to my taking lots of APs, it took a really long time to find times I could meet with staff, so it took the whole year and I haven't used it yet. There are a few pass/fails on my transcript - (Precalc H, AP Physics C - 2nd Semester, AP Calculus AB). I've two Cs - Intro to Programming, AP Physics C - 1st semester. Other than that, I've gotten As and Bs.

Extracurriculars:[ul][]Research: 2012 Siemens Semifinalist, science fairs since 6th grade. My research has no category it belongs to in science fairs[]Creative Writing - 3 time NaNoWriMo finisher, participation in writing contests (no awards yet) []Science Olympiad - 2 time participant, VP this coming year[]Trivia Club - lead bibliographer []Illustration Club - treasurer, co-founder []Track - Participated partway in junior year, injured partway through. Have D3 times []Cello - Had private lessons + youth orchestra 9th grade, then quit b/c of depression, restarted practicing this year. Will make a recording for musical supplement (I've been playing since I was 6).[]Volunteering: Volunteered quite a lot for freshman/sophomore years, focused at two organizations. Didn't do any junior year, plan to do some senior year. 144 hours total.[/ul]

Questions I have:
[ul][]For the AP Scores, what happens if I hide the AP Physics C scores? I mean 2s are pretty bad. []Is it bad that I have no trend in my GPA? [li]Are there really schools that are truly safe for me? I mean, my GPA is extremely rocky and my junior year will probably raise a TON of red flags.[/ul][/li]That's it for now.

Schools:
MIT
Brown
University of Rochester
Carleton College
Boston University
Smith College
Wellesley College
UC Berkeley
GA Tech
University of Pittsburgh
UC San Diego
UC Santa Cruz

Already submitted an application for UC Riverside via GAP.

Yes, this looks really long... But please chance me?

MIT and Brown are reach schools (as they are for anyone), but you seem to have a good chance of being accepted at Rochester

Yeah, haha. They both have what, 8% acceptance?

But okay, thanks.

No problem haha but yea although they’re extremely selective schools, your extra circulars and SAT score are strong. Your subject tests is the main aspect of your application that brings you down

I just realized I forgot to talk about what majors I wanted to do.
Majors:

[ul][]MIT: BCS (Course 9)[]Brown: Cognitive Neuroscience []University of Rochester: Brain and Cognitive Sciences []Carleton College: Computer Science
[]Boston University: Neuroscience []Smith College: Neuroscience []Wellesley College:Cognitive Science and Linguistics []UC Berkeley: Cognitive Science []GA Tech: Computer Science []University of Pittsburgh: Computer Science or Neuroscience []UCSD: Cognitive Science with emphasis in Neuroscience []UC Santa Cruz: bioinformatics [li]Riverside: neuroscience [/ul]
[/li]

Also, pretty shortly, I’ll be going to Carleton Computer Science Institute this summer.

I’m planning on retaking the SAT IIs either in October or November. I don’t really want to take the SAT I again, but my mom thinks my scores right now make me look like a humanities person.

When you retake the SAT II try to get at least 700, if not higher (most successful applicants to ivy league schools have 750+).

Haha cool, that’s what I was thinking I needed to do.

As I was on my last thread, I am surprised at how fast these things get old.

Taken out of context, that quote has to be my all-time favorite on this thread. “My mom thinks my scores make me look like a humanities person.”

Your GPA is indeed lower than ideal, but your SAT scores are pretty solid. Your EC’s could use a little pep, though (congratulations on the Siemens Semifinalist thing, by the way-- freshman year my friends and I entered the We Can Change the World Siemens Competition and I know how much work it can be!). Hopefully colleges can sympathize with your depression, although it might be harder with the competitive ivy leagues, etc. I would put MIT + Ivies + Wellesley + Berkeley at reach, rest at matches + better (not looking at Stanford ? lol)

Take what I say with a grain of salt though, I am only 16 and a rising senior.

By the way, could you chance me back? I would really appreciate it! ^_^

Chances for HYPSM, Ivies? Will Chance Back! :D

@infinityoo: hahaha nice to know
@lastspartan: Okay, yeah. I’m trying to make my college essays mention depression, but then make it very optimistic so they have no qualms about me being a possible axe murderer or something.

Haha, I only have one Ivy though. Oh well. A lot of people at my school intend to apply to all the Ivies and not many other schools. I’m not looking at Stanford because it’s too close to home for comfort. Berkeley and Santa Cruz are pretty close, but since they require 1.5 or more hours driving, they’re not as visitable.

Okay, I’ll look for your thread. This forum has so many new posts/replies per minute that they tend to get lost.

My bad- I meant to add the hyperlink lol

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1523385-chances-hypsm-ivies-will-chance-back-d.html</a></p>

Ah, okay.
I just posted on your thread. :)

Not to be condescending & unkind, but mentioning any type of weakness in a college essay might not allow the applicant to shine strongly, unless it is used it in such a way to describe how it has allowed the applicant to become stronger & intensely driven.

An essay flowing & transitioning as the one in the link provided below with the similar topic of self-improvement can be helpful with detailing maturity & dedication.

Example Stanford Acceptance Short Essay:
<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube;

Also, chances at each mentioned university should be strengthened if a positive trend regarding GPA is present.

PS: I am not the woman(or, in general, a woman) in the video.

Thanks.
I’ve heard that also. However, a lot of people around me think that I can write a strong essay, so I’ll try that.

Good luck; hope it works out for the best.

MIT: Reach
Brown: Reach
Carleton:
BU: Match
Smith: Match
Wellesley: Reach
GA Tech: Match
Berkeley: Match
UPitt: Low match
UCR: Safety
UCSD: Low match
UCSC: Safety

Thanks!

So does anyone have an opinion on my physics dilemma? Should I retake the equivalent of Physics C at the local community college? I got 2s on both Physics C tests.

Yikes about those APs…
