Hi! I am a current high school senior who just got accepted into NYU Stern School of Business. I am thinking of transferring to Columbia University in the City of New York in my college freshman year. I don't know if I should do it or not, and if it is actually possible to transfer that way. I don't have great GPA in high school, but it is one of the best private high schools in US (The Lawrenceville School), and my GPA is 3.76 (out of 4.0). My SAT is 2290 and SAT IIs are Math II 800, Literature 720. I had a lot of activities in my high school and I had several leadership positions and many community service awards (>400 hours).

If I want to transfer to Columbia, what is the minimum GPA needed for freshman year? Also, is it better to transfer in sophomore year or freshman year in college (because my high school GPA is low)? Should I retake SAT I and SAT II? Do I even have a chance?

Thank you!

Give stern a shot first and if you don’t like it in December/January of your freshman year start writing apps. There’s no point thinking about it now or you will go into NYU hating it from the start.

There is not minimum gpa; conventional wisdom is that for selective colleges, your college gpa should be at least 3.7, and of course, the higher the better.

Because of when you have to submit your transfer application, you will have only completed 1 sem of college when you apply as a soph transfer vs. 3 full semesters as a jr transfer (the transfer jargon is to refer to the year you transfer into the new school, not when you send applications). With such a short college record, what you do in HS will be weighted more for soph than jr transfer applicants.

No need to retake any of those SATs, both because the scores are high enough not to be a hinderance and because Subject tests are redundant once you’re in college.
