You’re new here, so possibly you haven’t seen this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/massachusetts-institute-technology/939227-reminder-no-one-not-even-me-can-give-you-an-accurate-chance-at-mit-p1.html. It’s about MIT, but holds true as well for Yale, as well.

You sound like a wonderful candidate, as will the vast majority of students who are rejected. Recommendations and essays will probably determine the outcome, and we are not the people reading those.

Keep in mind that Yale and their peer schools restrict international students to around 10% to 11% of their incoming class. As Yale seeks to matriculate about 1300 freshman, that means that only about 140 to 150 slots are allotted for international students. I’m not sure how many of those students are from China, but the odds for international students, no matter what their stats, are not great. For example: Although Yale doesn’t provide statistics about the number of international students and their country, Harvard does. At Harvard there are currently 49 students from China enrolled in the undergraduate program, which means that Harvard accepts about 12 students a year from China (see: http://www.hio.harvard.edu/statistics). I imagine it’s about the same at Yale.

Sorry I should’ve clearly: I am an American citizen(asian ethnicity), living in china.Am I counted as an international applicant, as i have heard that I am counted as an American?

THANK YOU so much for all the help, links and stats.

^^ You are correct. For the purposes of admissions, US Citizens living abroad are considered domestic applicants.

That said, please review the MIT link in post #1. With more academically qualified applicants than they have room for, Yale (and their peer schools) use a student’s essay, teacher recommendations, guidance counselor report and interview report to help them select those students that will make a difference and change the world. Harvard has something posted on their website that I imagine applies to YPSM et al.

That means that a student who might be academically qualified will be rejected because they lack what the university terms as “future promise.” A college learns about a student’s “future promise” form their teacher recommendations and guidance counselor’s report. So, it’s really impossible to predict based upon a student’s stats if they have that elusive key of “future promise.”

I truly appreciate your prompt response.
