chance? and uw honors?

Hey, I was just wondering if being accepted into UW next year is going to be a shoo-in for me. I'm guessing it's a good match, but I just read a last post that said someone got rejected but accepted into other top schools, so I'm just wondering.

I'm an in-stater who moved summer before junior year from Oregon. The reason I moved is funny, because we moved so I could be in-state if I were to attend. My brother got accepted and is a freshman currently, but his first year tuition is out-of-state. So much to my dismay, we moved from Oregon and now I currently attend school in Washington.

I'm currently a junior.

GRADES
3.917 unweighted cumulative GPA
40/503 class rank

3 B's so far:
1 in Health freshman year
2/3 trimesters of AP US History sophomore year (B, B, A trend)

3/6 AP classes currently

AP English Literature

5/6 AP classes senior year
AP English Language
AP Statistics

AP Economics

ACTIVITIES

swimming jv (2 years) - stopped due to change in schools and state
Key Club (3 years) - historian last year, vice president next year
Diversity Committee (2 years) - secretary this year, possible vice president

I also might start up a STAND chapter at our school for next year.

TESTING

610 critical reading
660 writing
700 math
(trying to work on these)

640 on sat u.s. history subject test

4 on AP US History exam
5 (projected) on AP Calculus AB
4/5 (projected) on AP Psychology

VOLUNTEERING WORK

I haven't done any continuous, regular volunteering. Usually my volunteering is through Key Club. I recently moved right before junior year so adjusting to the change has been difficult and it's been a slow process. I am going to start volunteering at the hospital this summer and through my senior year. I'll probably be getting a job this summer too.

ANDDDD

I was also wondering, anyone in UW Honors? And willing to tell me how that is? I've looked into it and if I get accepted I think I'll apply UW Honors... because I absolutely do not want all of my classes to be lectures, and I'd like to try it out.

lol youll get in..

Gracieloos,

My story is incredibly similar to yours--I moved from Oregon to Washington prior to my junior year and had to adjust to a new school, city, and state. Additionally, I had to maintain my academics, extracurriculars, and volunteer service.

Three years later, I am finishing up my freshman year at UW, paying in-state tuition, and excelling in the UW Honors Program. You have a very similar profile to mine too (with better grades but less activities and community involvement). If you'd like to see my profile, let me know. It'd be an opportunity for you to see the similarities (and learn from the differences).

You have the academic profile to get into UW and potentially the Honors Program. I will say this--the UW Honors Program seeks students who have the desire to explore the unknown, learn new perspectives, and challenges ideas. It is a program that seeks students who want to think outside the box and learn to think instead of reproducing facts and knowledge.

With that said, the honors program is not based solely on your grades, test scores, and profile. I know students who had spectacular grades and test scores (including a perfect 36 on the ACT) and were rejected from the program.

The key to the Honors Program is to write an essay that expresses that creative desire to learn. I'd be glad to help you out with that or any other college stuff (applications and scholarships). If you have any other questions, feel free to send me a private message. Best of luck to you!

I just realized you asked what the UW honors program is like. I actually wrote a piece on it in another thread. You can find it here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=344050. Send me a PM if you have any specific questions regarding the Honors Program. I'd be more than happy to answer them.
