Chance another Canadian

So.. im pretty much applying to:

Harvard, MIT, Yale, Columbia maybe Cooper Union as well

(engineering for all)

Mixed Male: (korean/white)

I can play for the MIT tennis team, already talked with the coach, the other schools their teams are too good (possibly I could be on the practice team- but that wouldn't hold weight)

also my interview for MIT seemed to go well

my school is a selective boarding school (international)

GPA: 4.0/4.0 (throughout high school) Grade 9: 2 honours, 10: 3 honours,
11: 5 honours, 12: 4 APs, (in my school you cant take APs until 12th year)

SATs: 2040/2400 (CR: 670, Math: 740, Writing: 630) essay 9
Subject tests: Math 2: 690, Physics: 650, Lit: 640 (not good i know.. but canada works on a different education system and it really doesn't leave us in good standing for the subject tests until after our gr. 12 year)

ACT: 31 (33 math, 35 science, 30 reading, 27 english) essay: 10, english/writing: 28

Recomendations: I assume they are good ( i didnt see them, but my teachers seem to like me)

Essays : again i think they are good, one talks about my different background and another about something i thought was a virtue turned out to be a vice, what i learned from this realization (all relate to why university is the next step)

ECs:

tennis: 3rd singles (school varsity team)
helped coach U/16 team
top 75 in my province
coach at my club (during school year as well)

debating: captain, top 10 in a lot of debates, team won provincial like tournament (partner and I came 2nd)

leadamerica

community service: most hours in my dorm
heavily involved in:

amnesty international - letter writing for political prisoners

Environmental: participated in shoreline cleanups for lake ontario, WWF CN tower climb got a group together and raised over $1000 past 2 years, leader in my schools recycling project in charge of increasing recycling in school and dorms

also:

politics club: do model UNs
school appointed tutor: chem, physics and math
Admissions assistant: appointed to tour prospective students around the school
Biology 'tutor': during a study period i open the bio lab to help students with their labs or with concepts they have problems in
Cadets: marching (4 years)

awards:

honour roll throughout high school
Merit scholar (private schools cost money...haha)

math contests: pascal and cayley top 25% of all participants (national contest)

I know my schools are reaches but i just want to kinda know if i have a chance or not

come on ppl.. can you help me out here...

bummmpppppp

guys i would really really appreciate any advice....

Your SATs are a little low for those universities, but your marks + ECs are strong. It's just that nothing really seem to stand out about you - another tennis-playing, debating Asian with good marks. Which doesn't necessarily mean you won't get in; no one can really predict who can get into the Ivies anyways.

Dammn.. why do us asians have to be so good at everything hahaha.. its a good thing im part caucasian too eh? but yaa i know my SATs are kinda low my ACT isnt too bad but again kinda low.. oh well.. thx tho for your opinion and good luck with ur schools

I'm trying for engineering in top schools, too. You're profile looks really strong, but again, the SATs are low for the places you're applying. But you definitely have a chance with your other stats. I think you might have the best chance at Cooper Union, granted it's tiny, but they do like personality. That's the vibe I got from them anyways.

I'd say your SATs are good, but below average for the schools.
At least you got some korean blood to help you out in math :D

I think your GPA will carry you, you have pretty good shots at most of those schools. Best of luck!

thanks guys.. any more comments out there ppl.. plz be honest.. i dont really care.. id rather ppl just be straight up and honest

I think you have a fairly good shot at those schools.

tahnks thanks.. keep them coming people!!

Your GPA is really good, and your test scores are around average for your schools, maybe even a little low, all things considered. It's almost as if you need a 2200 or 34 to have a decent shot at an Ivy League.

Only saying that because one of my best friends was deferred ED to Brown. She is Valedictorian in the IB program (6.0 weighted GPA) and had a 1360 (though she just improved to a 1420). She had a lot of ECs like you. Varsity and captain golf player, tons of community service, involved with NHS and other clubs. It really sucks.. it's like she has worked her butt off all through high school, and it's like what else can she do!?

Anyways, back to you... your ECs seem kind of scattered, but they are still good, and make you well-rounded. Maybe it's not too late to start an Engineering Club. My friend just started one the beginning of this school year. You have a good chance, but then again, Ivies are really competitive and so unpredictable!

Good luck!

Your ACT Science score is crazy. That was the hardest section. EVER. Anyway, I think that you have a fair chance in getting into at least one of these schools, though like someone said before, there is nothing that truly stands out for you. However, this is the same with many people, including myself. Your SAT scores could be higher, are you taking the January tests? Make sure you have safeties, just in case, though I'm sure you know this.

not good i know.. but canada works on a different education system and it really doesn't leave us in good standing for the subject tests until after our gr. 12 year)

.....agreed... I'm Canadian too and had to self study for all my SAT 2s because we weren't learning any of it till later in the year =(

...I think you have a shot.

Umm...SAT scores are a bit low. It really depends from what area of Canada you're applying from as well I'd think.

I'm Canadian, and the majority of my friends aiming for similar schools have 2200+ and 750+ on SAT IIs. =S

But if you're being recruited, you should be fine.

think you got a chance, your GPA is good and your sat scores are low(higher than mine, jealous) but you got ACT scores as well. Wish you luck!

Thanks guys.. keep them coming.. i wrote the SAT a few times already (1st time didnt study at all, 2nd time was sick for 2 weeks before the test .... 3rd time did ok - superscore doesnt help me much clearly haha) so im not sure it would be ok if i write them again.. i might write the ACT in febuary but it be a crapshoot if i can raise it to a 32+.. (also i would have to send in the scores right away without a chance to view them myself first).. but thanks for the advice..

yeah i think you probably wont get into MIT (but you never know) because they usually only accept applicants with 800's and high 700's on the SAT (especially the math) but id say youve got a good shot at columbia. im applying engineering to columbia and yale also...columbia's engineering program is a tad bit easier to get into than their liberal arts program. and as for yale...just as much of a crap shoot.

i think your EC's are good. your test scores are low, but hopefully they'll take a look at your ACT (i got a 32 composite on ACT, but only a 27 on the science part. the science was ridiculously hard, so its good you got a 35) and as for harvard....what kind of engineering do you want to do? i was gonna apply to harvard, but i looked it up and they dont have have an engineering school...im pretty sure they only have like 2 different majors in engineering. so maybe thatll mean less engineering applicants and a better chance for you?

yaa.. harvard doesnt really have the 'best' engineering program- but its harvard haha so idk.. umm engineering im not really sure .. yaa for MIT i think the only thing i have going for me is the tennis and interview.. idk how much they can help me but ill see.. anyways good luck with ur schools
