Chance at Duke, Stanford, UChicago

I feel like my statistics really under represent me, but that's probably true because up until this point in time I haven't really cared much about school. I'll be spending the summer beefing up my resume.

Applying Early Decision to Duke.

Recommendations
From my AP USH, Psych, and possibly AP psych teacher if she doesn't retire. She is a psychologist and knows me really well. She's really a brilliant woman who I should have an excellent recommendation from. (I assume this will be pretty helpful since I've had numerous [outside of class] talks about psychology with her, which is what I plan on majoring and doing research in during college)

Most likely from my AP Language teacher. She also knows me really well and had both of my brothers so I figure she'll show some good insight into who I am after knowing my family and less driven brothers.

Optional Rec- That's a toss up right now. Could be from my grandmother (PhD in Psychology), my mom's cousin (Duke alumni and big man in banking industry), soccer coach, or another family friend.

Not to sound pompous, but I'm actually a really good writer and have already started thinking about things I would like to say on my app. I plan on incorporating my leadership in school, soccer, the charity benefit I'm planning, my interest in psychology, and topics I want to research along with experiments I already have in mind.

Other
On the All County MCAIC Academic Soccer Team
Played travel soccer Sophomore-Senior year (captain during senior year)
Probably some more stuff that I can't think of

You need to bring your SAT scores up more. Even you hit your goal, your scores will hurt your application.

The ECs look pretty good. I’d say Chicago and Duke are reaches, and that Stanford is a high reach.

Honestly, I’d be surprised if you get into any of those 3. Your SAT score is very weak compared to the typical scores of students who get into those schools.

Bringin your SAT score up 220 points is not impossible but certainly not a sure thing. And usually it is easier to bring your math score up through intensive study than CR or W. Good luck to you. I would agree that all of these schools are reaches, even with the projected improvement in your test scores. Chicago is perhaps your best best if you knock the essays out of the park. I’d plan on building your summer around crafting the best essays you’ve ever written.

Also, for these schools you might be better off if you planned to take a fourth year of math. You might consider taking AP Stats if your school offers it, or try to tough out calc, and give up either AP Bio or Chem.

Oh, and I hope you’ve been thinking about some good match and safety schools as well – places you would be as happy at as Duke or Stanford.

Good, I need a goal to work to rather than a “sure thing”. Keep in mind that Duke is my number 1 and I’ll be applying ED when you chance it, I think that should help me a bit.

My safety school is University of Florida

And I’ve already thought about the math thing, but all of my schools brilliant math teachers are retiring or won’t be teaching AP Stat or Calc. My precal teacher is already incompetent when it comes to teaching, so taking math would probably only lower my gpa.

It’s hard to see why you would be interested in UChi if Duke is your first choice. They have little in common apart from being top-ranked universities.

cnaut, thanks i’ll be sure to check that out.

green, well Duke is my number 1 because it is an an extremely strong school academically and socially. Chicago I’ve yet to tour, but what I’ve gotten in the mail and read about it makes me interested in it. Things could change

Edit: Cnaut, I just looked at that site and people either gave some pretty bare bones information about themselves for Duke or didn’t have that much going for them. Their SAT scores won’t be too different from mine after I take the SAT again. Yes, I’m banking on getting a lot better scores. When I put my mind to something I can do it.

just study a ton for your SATs or try the ACT. then you’ll be fine with great essays/recs. GL!

Id work on trying to get your SAT score up :stuck_out_tongue: the way you have it calculated (what you will probably get the next time you take it) you have a 2100…which is on the low end for stanford. keep in mind that stanford is a reallyyy competitive school, so you should be aiming nearer 2200 at least.
uchicago…i think if you beef up ECs more and maintain a good gpa you’d have a fairly decent shot. but stanford might be a stretch :P

Superscoring is no longer permitted for the class of 2010. Keep in mind as well that several top colleges require that you submit all scores from all test administrations. You might do better on the ACT in June. Get the REAL ACT and do the practice tests. Good luck!

Barrister, for which school? When I was at Duke a few weeks ago they said they “gladly superscored”
