So basically, I'm sitting here with a 225 PSAT in Hawaii. 2140 SAT, 4.00+ GPA, pretty good extracurriculars, all that jazz. Pretty self-assured that I'll get finalist status.

Until my counselor informs that one of her counselor friends, who have dealt with National Merit Semifinalists before, says that I don't have the scores to get it. Well then.

Any chance on who to believe? I understand the saying, "Don't count your chicken before they hatch.", but from my understanding I thought I had a pretty good chance...

undeniiable…You will definitely make NMSF status. A PSAT score of 225 would qualify you in any state and your 2140 SAT score is well above the historical mark for a “validating” score (usually anything above 2000). As long as you took the SAT sometime in or after October of your sophomore year you’ve already cleared the toughest hurdles.

Make sure you stay in contact with your GC office to make sure they get you the paperwork package. You’ll need to fill out the paperwork, write a short essay, and get a Letter of Rec written by your school. It looks like the totality of your academic record won’t be any issue and as long as you don’t have any disciplinary issues in your record that part is covered as well. Finally, make sure you send your SAT score to NMSC (code #0085) to fill that square. Once all of that is done, it should pretty much be a waiting game until February to hear about Finalist status.

Congrats on a fantastic academic record and performance. Good Luck with your college search!!

Unless you are a discipline problem at school, forget to send your SAT score to NMCorp (#0085), don’t do the paperwork, write a rude essay, you will make it…as long as your GC isn’t a lazy person who doesn’t do HER part.

You’ll make it. Congrats. And, when you do make it…send a note to this GC’s friend. lol
