Hi, can someone please chance me for the elite schools?
I am a foreign student (been in the US for 7 years) and i am an incoming senior at an average high school.
I have a 900/1600 new SAT score (940 Superscore) (I know it’s bad)
I am hispanic (mexican)
I have an average gpa for my high school (mostly, Bs and few As and Cs).
I have very strong ECs:
I have been taking a research class for 3 years (and for my senior year) and i have done research this summer at a university. The research opportunity involved biology
Officer for robotics for a year and involved in robotics for 4 years
Red cross member 4 years
ASPIRE member 4 years
ARISTA secretary 1 year
Soccer team 4 years
Humanitarian Club 4 years (secretary junior year)
I have taken 3 AP classes but i have only taken 2 AP tests (spanish language and culture-5, physics 1-1 and comp science- not taken)
1 parent (father deceased)
Great recommendation letters
I am a NYC resident
I really want to be an engineer but im worried my SAT is too low. Can someone chance me?
Planning on applying to:
MIT
Cornell
Harvard
Princeton
Columbia
Stanford
Yale
NYU
You will get into 0 of those schools. Most of those schools don’t even superscore anyway, not that it would matter. People need to stop asking ridiculous chance threads like these.
A URM hook may make up for stats that are somewhat lower than average for that university. Your stats are extremely low. You need to focus on more realistic choices.
There is no “impossible” for you getting into those IVY leagues, but my realistic point of view is that your chance of getting into NYU (the least subjective uni from your list) would be around 0.001% or maybe even lower but never higher. Like you said, your ECs are pretty attentive but your SAT is beyond “bad”. Try to get at least around 1200 ish then you might upgrade your chance to 0.005%. I am not being satirical here, but being very realistic. You gotta work your ass off to get into those amazing schools
Just because you are an URM doesn’t mean you have a chance at the top universities. You have to have stats at least somewhere CLOSE to the averages at those colleges. For SAT, you should be aiming for at least 1400, and that would still be on the low side. GPA-wise, you need mostly As and a few Bs, not the other way around. Your ECs are lacking of leadership positions, so that doesn’t really make you stand out either. I would really urge you to apply to more realistic schools, since all those schools you named are just way too far off. Consider schools from SUNY, since you are a NYS resident, that should not only save you a lot of money but offer you a great education as well.
