Do I have a chance?

Hello! I am sophomore and I am hispanic and was born in Mexico and moved here when I was 6.

People are always telling me that I could get into “whatever school I want” because of my grades and involvement but lately I have been seeing seniors being rejected from good colleges such as USC and it is shocking and really makes me doubt that I have any chance into getting good schools.

My unweighted GPA is a 3.962 while my weighted is 4.442. My class rank is 1 out of 210 and thus far this year I have been taking the most challenging courses I can at my school. I’ve taken Geometry Honors, Algebra 2 Honors, English 1 Honors, Physics Honors, AP World History, Pre-Calculus Honors, AP European History, English 2 Honors, and Biology Honors. Next year I am taking all AP classes. (+ German and Drama) I haven’t taken an ACT or SAT but I took my PSAT and got a 1400 out of the 1520 (710 in math + 690 in reading) I know it is hard to tell if I have any chance without ACT or SAT scores but my goal for my ACT is a 34. I hope to maintain my class rank through all of high school as well. I also got a 4 on my AP WH exam.

My extracurriculars include:

Science Club
Chemistry Club
National Honor Society
Thespian Honor Society
German Honor Society
Math Club
Class of 2019 Student Council
Drama Club
Link Crew
College & Career Ambassadors
(I am also currently working on starting a Green Club at my school to promote the wellness of our environment!)

Do I have a chance of getting into a good school, even possibly an Ivy League? Thanks!!!

It’s early yet, but your GPA looks good and your test scores look fine (could improve but will as you get older/take more classes). However, your EC’s seems weak and lacking real substance. If I were you I would work on finding something you’re passionate about and getting involved that way. Having something specific that you do that stands out is generally more helpful than membership to a handful of honor societies, although those are beneficial too.

Apologies if that sounded convoluted- basically you should work on improving your EC’s and your SAT (to a lesser degree) if you want to enter to competitive range for Ivies, which would be reaches anyway.
