Chance at UCSD CS/staying another semester at CC

Transferring from a community college in San Diego
GPA:4.0
Major GPA:4.0
IGETC:3 more classes
EC: Math tutor/member of a machine learning group/planning on going to hacksd

I was planning on applying as an ECE CSE major because it was less competitive than CS. However, CSE requires the entire physics series, which is creating a big problem for me. I am currently waitlisted for E&M and the chances of getting in look slim (#3 on the waitlist with a popular professor). If I do not get off the waitlist that will mean that I will have to attend another semester to qualify for the assist.org requirements.

If I decide to change my major to cs, I will have my assist.org requirements passed off. However, that means its going to be much more competitive compared to cse.

My life goal is to work at a software engineer, so both cs and cse will be applicable to my job.

Should I just stay another semester so I have a higher chance of getting into ucsd?
or
Apply as a cs major and pray I get in.

That 20% cs addmision rate doesn’t look so hot even as a San Diego resident. Should I try to improve my ECs so im more competitve for cs??

Does staying an extra semester mean applying for fall 2020?

Have you considered applying as a CS major to UCSD + other UCs and then if you don’t get in, consider finishing the physics sequence? That’s what I would do personally, just to move forward. But it’s really up to you and your own person

Just apply. worse case scenario, you’ll have to reapply next year. And at that point you’ll be more familiar w/ the application process. But honestly if you have a 4.0 w/ all reqs done, it seems like you’re a pretty good candidate.

ECE is Electrical and Computer Engineering and CSE is Computer Science and Engineering.
CSE is a very rigorous computer science major and is very competitive.
I am not sure why you say ECE CSE is less competitive.

I agree with @OhWhatsHerName and @ericbadmon in that I would apply as a CS major for Fall 2019. If you are not accepted to any choice schools, then finish the Physics series and reapply for Fall 2020.

You are a competitive applicant with your current GPA so best of luck.

You’ll be surprised how much overlap there is with computers. A lot of CS people do CSE, and a lot of CSE people end up doing CS. Even more CSE and CS people end up in IT and never look at a math problem their entire career. Don’t stress over it. Find something that works and go for it.

you should be working with the xfer center at your CC. They have contacts at the UCs they can turn to when they have questions, as well as attending training. Ask your counselor to assess your chances for xfer based on their experience and the info they have been given.

Isn’t #3 on a waitlist pretty good odds?
