Hi! I'm going to be a senior this year, and have basically decided that my top 2 schools that i will be applying to are UNC- Chapel Hill, and UVA.

I really don't think my chances at UNC or UVA are that great, but if someone can let me know if i have a shot at the schools that would be appreciated.

ALSO, if there are any schools that are similar to UNC/UVA that should be worth mentioning; schools that I have a good chance of getting into and resemble UNC/UVA, please let me know.

Thank you

UVA is a hard school to get into if you’re not from the state of Virginia…currently they accept 2/3 of their students just from Virginia.

Yeah, being an OOS applicant doesn’t help me at all for both of these schools. Like you said, UVA is 66% instate students, and i know that UNC is 80% carolina students.

these are my top 2 also! i’m a virginia resident who has always dreamed of unc (born and raised a tarheel fan)

i’d say your chances are all right, slightly better at uva than at unc, but not great at either. uva accepts a high percentage from in state, yes, but significantly less than unc is mandated to. so your odds are slightly better there i’d say. in terms of other schools with the same feel, i haven’t found any quite as amazing as these two. but uga, penn state, and clemson have appealed to me also. i’m not applying to clemson due to it not fitting me academically with my major and such, but i visited and fell in love with it surprisingly, especially given i’ve grown up hating the place. it’s gorgeous, and the students have a passion for their school just like at unc and uva.

hopefully things work out for you! let everyone on college confidential know how it turns out.
chance me back! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/985365-unc-uva-last-chance.html#post1065479598

Just a thought - I’ve heard it said that schools very frequently see strong math/science students that aren’t great in english/reading and therefore don’t stand out in a competitive applicant pool. I would very strongly recommend doing a self-study for the SAT on Reading/Writing because I think it would greatly increase your chances!!

those are my top schools too. I think Wake Forest is pretty similar and you might want to check out my thread too:

You have pretty good chances, your ECs and Gpa are both very good. Work on your SATs a little, maybe take the ACT
as for schools that are similar, maybe check out Vanderbilt? even though it is private it is similar
best of luck to you!

chance me back please!
