Chance Computer Science - free beer

Hi, I’d like to enter RIT Computer Science and I understand that for CompSci every school has harder chances than most of the other majors. Please take that into account because I can’t afford to apply to too many reaches. I’d like to apply to matches only, thank you.

SAT and grades
Reading = 600
Math = 650
unweightedgpa = 3.51
weightedgpa = 3.9 (approximate guess since it hasn’t been released yet)

ECS
Newspaper
Yearbook
Robotics

Classes
APs (my school only offers Calc)
Calculus

I am self taught Python computer language using videos.
I also take Java computer language in highschool.

I’d like to take the Software Engineering track or similar. I’m also 90% sure I want to get my masters if by that time I can afford it. I know that RIT offers the coterminal degree so I intend to schedule my time there efficiently to graduate with both.

Reasons I like RIT:
Excellent Coop reputation
Excellent job turnout 95% within 6 months
Good reputation
Well laid out campus environment

Reasons I don’t like RIT:
Further from home than I’d like to be (5 hour drive)
Middle of no where
Colder than other parts of that region because of the nearby lake
Assuming that the COA will be higher than I can afford but I can’t know for sure until we talk about price.
Average 2016 freshman is satm=676, satcr=671, ugpa=3.63, wgpa=3.93

EFC approximately $10k
Fam Income approximately $100k
NJ resident
Health issue with juvenile arthritis I occasionally use a cane, but I don’t need wheel chair. RIT can provide accomodations with nearby dorms so I’m ok with that.
My interest is working in software development and software dev research. I’d like to start a software company.

I wouldn’t really consider RIT to be in the “middle of nowhere”. It’s just outside the 3rd largest city in New York.

A large population of residents does not make for any interesting sites to see, but fair enough and point taken.

There are plenty of waterfalls, wineries and skiing near RIT.

Here is the RIT Alpine Ski team website:
https://www.rit.edu/sg/alpine/

wineries in Rochester:

hiking and state parks, the Finger Lakes are close !

If you bring a car, the Rochester region has a lot to do. If you stick to campus, may be less interesting.

@slimmy what did you decide to do?

@jd91200 I will be applying Early Decision in November to RPI. If I get deferred or rejected I will then very gladly apply to RIT, Syracuse, Bucknell, Rowan,

I was really hoping to give away some virtually free beer but I haven’t received anyone’s chances to me for this ‘ChanceMe’ thread.

well I can share my son’s experience with you. His GPA is 3.5 UW and his SAT was 1440 (750 M and 690 R). Not a ton of eca but did play a Varsity sport for 4 years. He applied all RD. He did not get into RPI or WPI and was waitlisted for Stevens. As for RIT he did not get in for the major he applied for (Computer Science), but he was offered acceptance for Computing Exploration. So my suggestion would be to apply for RIT for comp sci, but also do a second choice major. RIT accepts based on majors and I was told there were only 200 spots for Comp Sci (I assume that was what was left for RD). Oh and no need for any virtual beer!! Good luck to you.

Thank you so much, (virtual peace sign).
I will apply to both majors, thanks for the tip.

If I were you, I’d add Richard Stockton near Atlantic City to your safety list. It’s growing (adding a campus on the Boardwalk), but has a long-established CS Dept. Started as a feeder school for mainframes, especially those related to healthcare and the nearby FAA/TSA/Homeland Security R&D center. I know other Stockton grads who got jobs at IGT, developing software used in slot machines.
