Chance for any ivies? How much of a boost will my course load give me?

I got a 2300 on the SAT-790 math, 740 critical reading, 770 writing. I will be applying to all Ivy League schools (dream school is Brown) but my GPA is kind of low ~3.75 but there is a huge upward trend and I took 8 core classes junior year (7 IB 1 AP). I'm taking 8 IB classes senior year so maybe the rigorous course load makes up for low GPA. Extracurriculars: I'm co-captain of a local youth cricket team and co-president of a school cricket club. I don't know if these are extracurricular, but other things I do include investing in stocks, ebay business, and managing real estate oversees. Could those things be listed as extracurriculars? I'm also volunteering at a hospital atm
Classes:
Sophmore year all Pre-AP and 2 AP classes (US History, Comp Sci)
Junior year: IB chem SL, IB Bio SL, IB English SL, IB European history, IB Spanish SL, IB TOK, IB Calc BC, AP Environmental science (7 IB classes, 1 AP class)
Senior year: IB bio HL, IB chem HL, IB physics SL, IB English HL, IB history HL, IB psychology SL, IB economics SL, IB TOK/IB math SL, (8 IB classes)
Do you think my course load will help much for classes?
Thanks for any replies.

Please ignore everything redhuntinghat said.

Unfortunately I don’t think rigor will make much of a difference. Nearly everyone I’ve seen in Ivy result threads have similar / slightly less rigor courseload.

You have a fair chance at every ivy out there. Your ECs seem above average, regardless of what the moron above this post stated. Investing/Having your own Business/Managing Real Estate are very much ECs and are rather unique and strong ECs at that. That being said they must have some depth to be substantial (e.g. a hundred dollars made on ebay will not get you anywhere admission-wise.)

Your SAT / Upward trend will make up for your slightly lower GPA. Also admissions will take into account your schedule/school, thus I don’t think your lower GPA will have much of impact, if any.

What it will come down to are the usual. Essays, Recs and any hooks you have.

The upward trend in your GPA is good and the rigor of your course work is good too, but overall it is probably one of your weaknesses in your overall application (in my opinion, but you probably already figured that).

With all that said, your ECs look good and your SAT is great, so really work on your essays over the summer!

Overall, the only way you don’t have any chance is if you don’t apply! If Brown is your dream school then I would strongly consider applying ED there this fall. Just keep your hopes higher than your expectations. Best of luck!

@Redhuntinghat - Simply because your baseless opinion does not line up with mine doesn’t mean I’m unaware, ill-informed or ignorant. It’s rather quite the contrary.

I’ve looked at several hundred cases of students being rejected / deferred / accepted for Wharton (UPenn) ED. Granted Wharton is not Brown. However, I’d say the trend that I saw will be similar to most, if not every other Ivy.

What I see from Samuraisma is roughly what the standard person who was accepted to Wharton looked like (UPenn’s Wharton is right there in the HYPS range in terms of acceptance rate).

Thus, from what I’ve seen prior compared to what I am seeing now. I’ll conclude that he or she has a great chance to get into Brown.

That aside, go for it Samurai. Ganbare! ;)

Little Sidenote: “You obviously have no idea that all ivies have less than a 10% acceptance rate”

You need to do better research before commenting on someones chance at their dream. Cornell’s 2012 acceptance rate was 16.2% and University of Pennsylvania’s 2012 acceptance rate was 12.43%.

@redhuntinghat- …I don’t even know where to start. If you think enshadow is the most pretentious person you have ever seen on CC, you clearly haven’t even read into the double digits of ivy league chances. You do not need to crush samaraisma’s hopes at attending an ivy- I think he has just a good a chance as anyone else to attend. Sure, plenty get rejected, but as long as he proves his passion for his EC’s, the school, and establishes himself as an unique individual, he has a great chance. Also, the admission statistics only means about 10% of all applicants get in. Keep in mind those applicants are all people with different stats. If OP has some sort of hook, applies ED, is a great writer, gets someone they hold in regard to vouch for him, etc., his chances greatly increase.

Samurai- much as I hate to do it, I agree with redhuntinghat in that you need to apply to a few non-ivy’s. Even people with amazing stats choose a few safety schools, because the ivy’s are selective. Apply though- you have just as good a chance as anyone. And congratulations on your courseload- I’m sure they won’t hold a 3.75 against you with that amount of rigor and a really good SAT score.

Just came in this thread to say that redhuntinghat doesn’t know what he’s talking about. And he’s also a blatant ■■■■■.

Peace.

EDIT: As a legit reply, you can pretty much list anything you want as an EC as long as it has some sort of relevance with the rest of your application.

Also I would strongly reconsider applying to all of the Ivy League schools, only apply to ones you’d really want to go to. I initially started out planning for princeton, cornell, upenn, harvard, columbia but ended up narrowing it down to cornell, harvard and columbia after doing some research about their departments and programs they have.

Thanks for that info Peter :). After looking into redhunting’s post history, it feels useless to even have replied to him.

Definitely tack on some safety schools samurai. That’s always the best thing to do. If you wan’t a stronger feeling of whether or not you’ll be accepted be check out some Brown results threads from previous years.

Lol’d at redhuntinghat’s “advice”. Couldn’t tell if rhh was trying to sound helpful or condescending + the fact that she tried to target minuscule details like “I’m a girl” after getting caught at attempting to show off her knowledge (lol’d at the “all ivies have 10% or less acceptance rates.”)

Samurai, you have a good of a chance as anyone else.

I agree with redhuntinghat the Ivys are selective everyone has a 6-15% chance of getting in to the Ivys. I’m applying too and I already know that it up to chance that I get into the Ivys Stanford and MIT. I say this because of the talent of the applicant pool.
