chances at these ivies

I am currently a junior in high school, so I still have another year and a half to change anything. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

I will apply to a few more colleges or universities too just in case. It's always good to have a back up plan. Columbia's probably a bit of a reach for me. I don't even know if I'm fit enough for Ivy standards but it shouldn't hurt to try.

-unweighted GPA of 3.79-3.8 (so far. i still have senior year to go, hoping to bring it up to at least a 3.83 or something similar. i screwed up my freshman year, but i've been raising my grades every year since then)
-SAT: Reading: 770 M: 760 W: 770 (still have time to re-take though if necessary)
-SAT II: haven't taken yet.
-ACT: 34

-Rank: school doesn't do ranks
AP: none... i know, this is a bummer.
IB: IB HL economics, HL chemistry, HL physics, HL history, SL math, IB art and HL english, SL french ***planning to graduate with an IB diploma, I have all 6's and 7's
Planning to continue this senior year
-Course load: took some difficult courses when I could (for example, I took statistics freshman year).

-EC: yearbook staff all years so far, chess club in 9th grade, club for tutoring young children, international film club, school newspaper photographer. studying music and music theory since the age of 3, started recitals at the age of 6.
-Job/Work: Freelance photography, mostly fashion / shoot for clothing companies. Couldn't work a job at a store or with an actual company due to the fact that I had to spend much of my time at home tending to my younger siblings, as my mother was not home often during my 9th and 10th grade years.
-Volunteer/Community service: I do a decent amount of community service, not exactly sure of the number of hours as of now. Volunteer at homeless shelters, food kitchens, etc. Help sick or underprivileged kids learn, create and enjoy art (I love art so I incorporated it into my community service), have been asked to donated artwork (and accepted) to children's hospitals for permanent galleries and display. Displayed in other galleries as well.
-Summer Activities: Art program at an art college, interned for an international corporation that does marketing, sells resources such as iron ore, etc. (I also have a passion for business, thought I could incorporate that into my summer activities as well)
-Awards: Scholastic award winning artist (piece that received the award was a photograph)
Other than that, nothing. I should really have more awards. I know. I've had photographs published in newspapers and magazines.
-School Type: Freshman (scholarship 9th grade) and sophomore- private school in USA, must take several tests for admission. The school is an international school. For junior year, I am currently a boarding student at a prestigious private college prep academy overseas in Geneva because I wanted a foreign experience and to help my french. Not sure where I will go for senior year. Should I stay here or go back to the USA?
-Female

Hooks: nothing, really.

Anyway. Please give me any ideas as to what I should improve (I know I am not in enough clubs. However, the few that I am in, I am dedicated to). I do realize that I lack leadership and my GPA is quite low.

your sat probably as good or better than act, but i would retake it if you feel you haven’t reached your potential.

You’re profile’s pretty good i guess all in all,

you don’t really need to retake the sat 1s, i’d recommend spending the time focusing on giving the SAT 2s, and if you feel that you can do more than the 2 required by most colleges by all means go ahead…

seeing as your in Geneva i’d recommend staying there for senior year as well, it adds to your ‘diversity’ and ‘foreign experience’ which could make good starting points for essays if your stuck for ideas

try taking a SAT 2 in french if ur proficient enough, having a subject test in a language is a real positive atm :o

other than that… ivy league admissions are literally a crapshoot… i just got rejected from Upenn Ed, and although my sat 1 score was horrible, my sat 2s were pretty good and my EC’s as well, for an international applicant =/

so don’t be too let down if u don’t make it,

nd ur chances would be slightly different at different ivies based on different programs that you might apply too :o, so don’t treat every ivy and every program as having the same chance :o

goodluck =)

sat 2 not nearly important as sat 1

thank you! i know that the ivies are a crapshoot, i’ll probably apply to just two of them to try. no harm done and no loss if i don’t make it (except the application fees, i suppose).

i know my profile’s not amazing and i haven’t cured cancer or anything like that, but i’ll definitely try harder.

i think you’d have a great chance at cornell. i got a 1490/2260 sat 1, 760 math 2, 750 bio, 4.00 unweighted gpa and i got in =))

alright, i will definitely keep that in mind to encourage me a little bit, the only thing i’m kind of scared about is my GPA because when i apply, it won’t be more than a 3.79 or 3.8

focus on ecs & essays

no AP classes and no “hook”? very, very big reach, but good luck

@ above, well she’s taking IB classes right? those are harder than AP from what i’ve heard. i had ABSOLUTELY no hook. i’m asian too lol. my ECs were downright generic and a lot worse than hers.

i think cornell does care quite a bit about gpa. i think i read somewhere in the cornell decision thread of a 2300er getting rejected mostly for a bad gpa. but i think a 3.8 is ok. i’m not too sure if your senior gpa will matter if you apply ED or EA.

good luck!

I laughed when reading this… You should not be making major decisions such as this off of whether or not it will help you with college admissions. I highly doubt that staying for an extra year will be the deciding factor for you. Otherwise, i think you have a pretty decent chance at all of them

Ivies are reaches for like 99.9% of people depending on how they want to shape their class. With that in mind, I think you have some good scores, and are a bit interesting. Your ECs seem pretty focused, which is a good thing. As for as where you should attend next year, I say go to place where you’re happiest, can thrive academically/socially, and can get solid rec letters. You have a chance at any Ivy really, but it’s as good as any interesting, unhooked applicant. Good luck :)

I’d just really focus on your GPA. The test scores are great, and your extracurricular activities look good too. I’d just make sure you take every honors class available and make sure you get a 4.0 for the rest of high school. Good luck! You’re almost there!
