Applied ED and got deferred (recently sent an updated letter in)
Ethnicity: white
GPA: 3.8 out of 4 UW (not sure what my Weighted GPA is....should be a bit over 4)
ACT: 26 (ehhh)
Class Rank: 11 out 101 (should be 10 by the end of the year)
Extracurriculars: VERY involved in community/volunteer work; youth group president; was involved in chemistry research at a local university; Drama club; guitar; volleyball; NHS; the usual
Hooks: from a small farm town in the midwest; first generation college student; related to a state senator (don't really think that matters though)
Essays: I thought they were good - I wrote about how I will contribute to diversity and how my background makes me different. Plus, I think my character and sincerity really showed through in my essays and letter. I definitely think my essay was a huge part of why I was deferred and not rejected.
Recs: good I hope?
Course load: hardest available
Intended major: listed Marine Biology, Computer science, and International Relations as interests
I wrote a research paper about "adopting an open curriculum" for my ap english class, got a 100%, and sent it in
Wrote a legislative bill that I sent to a state senator for review - its currently still under review....I am going to send the cover page of this in
Got great mid year grades, including a 100% in a college Astronomy course and near a 100% in a college dual credit Calculus course

So do you think I stand a chance at getting in with my academic stats (class rank & act)? I am trying not to get too hopeful....I just love Brown and I am sure I would thrive in that environment! My class rank is due to a bad freshman year when I didn't really care and I got mostly B's....but I have had consistent improvement ever since and straight A's since sophomore year. This will show on my transcript.

Thanks!

The ACT score kills your application. Everything else looks alright, though.

What does “VERY involved in community/volunteer work” mean?

Like silverturtle said, your ACT score isn’t helping you, but I’m sure if you presented yourself in an agreeably unique way in your essay, then you have a chance. I don’t think the relation to a state senator will matter than much unless you worked with him/her.

I didn’t know coming from a farm city was a hook…

Chance back?

I have actually been working with the senator I mentioned - I sent my legislative bill to him and he has been reviewing it.

As for very involved in community/volunteer activities, I volunteer weekly (almost every weekday) at an after-school organization for kids as a mentor/tutor, I have been on six annual mission trips, I volunteer at a nursing home once a month, organize things like food drives and fundraisers as president of my youth group, and participate in other community based events such as Relay for Life, etc.

Geography can sometimes be a hook if you are from an under-represented area - and a vast majority of applicants to Brown come from the east and west coast…so I am figuring that coming from the Midwest and a really small town counts for a little. I hope.

I loathe the ACT.

It is a moot point now, but: Did you ever try the SAT?

Ah, I see you are using your family relation well, haha :)

Your volunteer service sounds good to me. It seems like after-school organization and large fund-raising events would stand out.

I am assuming that since you have been deferred, Brown U would like to see even more out of you. Are there any competitions or maybe set of test scores that you can build upon?

I got close to a 1700 on the SAT so, when converted, it was nearly identical to my ACT score. I wish I would have started preparing for these tests beginning with freshman year.

Well, I have done numerous activities since I was deferred and taken up a few more extracurriculars (the after school volunteering being one of them) and I performed during my school’s talent show (i play the guitar), but I haven’t necessarily won any sort of competitions since I sent off my app. Oh…but I did get voted as “Most kind hearted” girl in my class, if that counts. I did put that in my updated letter

Haha…I never thought that my cousin being a politician would ever be beneficial to me. I’m not really counting on that though - if its a contributing factor to my admittance, i can’t complain…but I would really like to be accepted for what I have accomplished.
