Hey guys! Please chance me for CMU, Cornell, University of Michigan and Princeton. I've applied for an engineering major.

SAT Reasoning Test: 540/550/680 (CR), 660/790/770 (Math), 600/600/620 (W)
TOEFL-ibt: 111

ECs/Awards:

Participation and merit in several inter and intra school science fairs (2006-2008)
Film Appreciation (Head of Animation Jury, Chinh India Kids Film Festival 2007)

Projects:
Improved solar powered vehicles by using batteries in place of on-board solar panels.
Built robots like obstacle avoiding vehicles, line followers, grid solving vehicle and a basic robotic hand.
Built a Low Temperature Differential Stirling Engine.
Developing means for extracting electricity from mechanical stresses involved in various processes (by using piezoelectric pressure pads and spring actuated dynamos). Will apply for patents.

Full paying international applicant, on a gap year.
School doesn't report rank and only 10th and 12th grade scores are sent, but I guess I should be in the top 10 percent.

Thanks in advance!

CMU and Michigan you’ll most definitely get into (though writing could be a tad higher, this is far overshadowed by your high subject tests and EC’s). As for Cornell and Princeton, your stats and EC’s are fantastic, but acceptance is always a toss-up when it comes to the ivies. Best of luck!

Woah, wasn’t expecting that! :stuck_out_tongue:
I was thinking that being and international applicant would hurt my chances, specially because I don’t have an extraordinary school record or SAT scores.

I don’t know why the above poster said you will definitely get into CMU and Mich, your SAT scores are just within the 50th percentile for both schools (your SAT W falls below CMU’s 25th percentile). You are by no means a guaranteed applicant, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you got accepter to either CMU or Mich. Princeton and Cornell are probably not going to happen. I hope you applied to more schools, because you may be rejected by all four.

Yeah Cornell was always gonna be a big reach, but not as big as Princeton I guess. I’ve applied to a couple of safeties too.
Do you think they can be a bit lenient on the writing sub section, considering English is not my first language?

It would make sense, but why would they, when there are hundreds of applicants with your stats and your background and your ECs who speak English flawlessly?

Haha yeah, I know. Was just saying. In fact I myself know a few who got perfect scores in the writing section.

Btw how would you rate my chances retrohippo?

I don’t see how Cornell would be a higher reach than Princeton. Google the admissions numbers, Princeton’s acceptance rate is significantly lower than Cornell’s.

(and hi retrohippo!)

Well, that’s what I said right? Cornell is not as big a reach as Princeton is? :-P

Whoops, I misread your previous post - my bad.

Hi dfree!

I’m not qualified to give you a real estimate, but I think you stand a chance. Great subject tests, some strong ECs, full-paying international… that definitely qualifies you to attend any of those schools. Your SAT reasoning is (relatively) low, so that may be detrimental, but I’d advise against retaking (3 times is enough!) unless you think you can improve substantially.

I think you stand a very good chance - but remember that many others do as well.

I think you have solid scores in the area you want to major in so that may help with CMU! When I was at my interview there they told me they like to see a very solid student in the area they want to study instead of a well-rounded lesser student in all areas. As for the others, I am not much help. Haha sorry!
