Chance for HYP

Hello all,

I am an Asian male from NJ with a decent SAT scores but a not-so-tight GPA.

I have 2290 on my SAT (1560 on 1600 scale): 780 in verbal, 780 in math, 730 in writing.

I have 3 SAT IIS: 800 in math level II, 800 in Chemistry, and 760 in biology

My GPA is 92.6 unweighted and 90.3 weighted. I have taken 7 AP classes in my high school so far and I guess the teachers were pretty difficult for some of them (like history, english, and biology) and thus I got Bs in those (85 in history, 83 in english, and 81 in bio). I have gotten Bs in most of the AP classes I have taken so far, and that is pretty much the problem.

I have been taking AP classes ahead of my years though, starting in 8th grade. I took AP Calculus BC in 8th grade; AP Statistics and AP Physics B in 9th; AP Chemistry in 10th; AP History, AP Biology, and AP English in 11th. This year, I am taking AP Economics and AP Government and Politics. So far I have gotten all 5s on all 7 of my AP tests.

The other thing is that, since 10th grade (because I skipped and finished my math requirements earlier than most people) I have been taking classes at Princeton University in math. I have gotten A-s in MAT214 and MAT215 at Princeton University so far. This year, I am taking MAT 211 and PHY103 (general physics) at Princeton.

For extracurriculars, I am in Central Jersey math league and science league. I qualified for ARML last year, the American regional math league. I am in National Honor Society, and I swim (not competitively though) and play the piano. I have about 150+ hours at the local hospital doing volunteer work (mostly clerical stuff). I have written a couple of articles for the local newspaper (I am not sure how much this counts though).

This summer, I went to NJ Governor's School for Engineering, a program for the top 80 math and science students in the state. There, I helped organized several community outreaches to underprivileged kids in Newark, Trenton, and Patterson). This is probably what I will be writing my essay on.

Please chance me for:

Harvard
Princeton
Yale
MIT
Columbia
Brown
Stanford
UPenn
Rice
UChicago
George Washington
NYU
Rutgers

I know it is a long and ambitious list but I would really appreciate it. Please give me your brutally honest opinion so I can be realistic about where I can expect to get into (i.e. if I am never going to get into Harvard, don't hesitate). Thanks a lot!

Bump Bump Bump

i'm not gonna lie, you're a good candidate but those schools are reaches for everyone. you'll be competing against people who have STELLAR sat's and GPAs, not to mention lots of awards... the ivies and stanford are a reach for you but the other ones seem to be more appropriate

Thanks for the response.

Most of the others I listed were backup schools; what I would really like to know is my chances for Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia.

If anyone could give me a percentage chance I have of bieng accepted, like 20%, 10%, or even 1%, or put a number on my chances at beign accepted to any of the ivies, it would really be great.

I just want to have my expectations in the right place before I apply :).

Does anyone else have anything else to add?

Princeton may be easier for you to get into because of the classes you took there.

LOL a 1560/2290 is about as "STELLAR" as it gets. Adcoms aren't going to turn you down because of a 1560. It wouldn't even be worth the retake money IMHO to get a 2400 at that point.

However, your GPA is a bit low. What's your rank? And if your school doesn't rank, where do you think you stand in terms of GPA as compared to the other students? Lastly, how many students get into HYP from your school and how do your stats compared to their stats?

Also, could you explain MAT 211/214/215? I'm unfamiliar with the math offerings at Princeton. BC in the 8th grade is impressive and pretty rare from what I understand.

Last time I asked, my GPA was in about the top 10%. It isn't the greatest but my school usually sends a couple to Harvard and Princeton every year and a somewhat greater number to UPenn and Columbia. Their GPAs are probably higher than mine, but then again they haven't been taking the hard AP classes since freshman year which kill your grade.

MAT 211/214/215 are math classes on number theory and real analysis in the single variable. This semester and next semester I am also taking physics 103 and 104 at Princeton, but I am not sure how well I am going to do yet (may get a B because the physics there is hard).

Do you need financial aid ?

Probably a bit, but my parents could probably pay for a significant portion of it; how does this affect my chances?

Anyone else have anything else to add?

Bump

Can anybody else give me some feedback?

Number theory is a fun class. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't got into HYPM, but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't.

I think that your application will show a significantly greater amount of demonstrated interest in mathematics/science than that of most applicants. I'm not in a position to give definite chances, but you'll be competitive everywhere.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't got into HYPM, but I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't."

??

Well, I mean that Ivy and Ivy peer admissions are relatively unpredictable. I believe that it will come down to factors that I am unable to evaluate. However, the limited amount of your application that you have posted on CC is competitive for admission.

You are relatively competitive for a spot, decent chances...

I was hoping that since I have all 5s on all my AP tests, it would show that the Bs I have in the AP classes simply meant the classes were harder than they needed to be. Do college admissions people look at it this way?

Could I please get any other opinions?

Please, anyone?

***? Calc BC in 8th grade? That's impressive. In 8th grade I think I was sucking on my thumb doing geometry and drawing retarded triangles.

I think you have a good chance with all of them, especially Princeton since you already "kind of" attend there. Good luck to your endeavors.
