Chance for Indiana University Bloomington?

White Male
Major: Business, do not intend to be a direct admit to Kelley
In state
GPA:3.5
ACT:23 first time taking, if deferred I plan to take again
Rank: 35/110(also rough, a couple students sneaked into the top 20 without taking any AP or honors classes)
I have taken 3 AP’s and 8 honors classes.(My school also offers dual credit classes from a local college, I took two and got an A in both)
Upward Trend
Letters of Recommendation: All great 9/10
Hooks: none
EC: Varsity soccer all 4 years, recruited by a decent amount of division three schools. I have gotten all conference for 3 years and all county for 2, school record for goals and assists(I also played travel and took a lot of my time). I have a job at a local pizza place where I work 30 hours a week, and will soon become a manager for the remainder of the school year. I have some other great ecs that include volunteer hours through my church, as well as some other programs and groups.
Essay: Good, spent a lot of time on it and talked about how I support myself through my job. I pay for insurance, gas, my car, food, with little to no help, excluding my house of course.
Income bracket: 100k+ will get zero financial aid

I am an awful test taker and it is obvious my bad act score will hurt my chances… Is there still hope?

I also have other safeties if this turns out to be a bust.

I am not that knowledgable on the admisssions process at Indiana, but I would say since it is a large public they will look more at GPA and test scores. Obviously if you get your ACT up to a 27 or so you would be in a much better position. Nonetheless you never know and you definitely still have a chance of some sort.

@obsessedwcollege IU has an acceptance rate 78% with average act scores around a 26-27 and a 3.64 GPA and accepts over 36,000 students per year… Given that I am below the average and around the 25th percentile, what are the odds? And yes, IU will definitely prioritize my GPA and test scores, rather than holistic admissions.

Although I got in with a GPA of 3.5 as well, my standardized test scores were way higher(SAT - 2250) which I think did it for me.
With your ACT scores, I suppose it is a bit tough.
Additionally, the business major, even if it is not in Kelley is still quite difficult to get into. I have friends with a higher GPA getting deferred there.

@Cavk Major does not affect your chances of getting accepted into IU. Otherwise everyone that wanted to get into Kelley but couldn’t be a DA would just put down something else and change it when they got to campus.

@iubaccounting are you currently a student at IU? If so, have you heard of people getting in with act scores as low as mine?

bump

@cspence101 have you actually applied already? I would say its a toss up based on GPA and test scores. The fact you have AP and honors courses may help you out a bit but you may want to try and take the ACT again and see if you can bring that up. A lot of people do better the second time around since they know what to expect.

@dcolosi I have already applied and it has been over a month. And I am going to take the ACT one more time as well.

I got into IU a few weeks ago with a 3.37W and 1170 SAT. I don’t know much about the admissions process but I feel like IU has more of a holistic review then some other big state schools. I had good ECs including 4yrs of Varsity Football and a great essay. I also sent a LOR that might help. What I personally think helped me the most is that I emailed my regional recruiter who accepts students in my area(found on the website) and explained to her that IU was my top choice and if there was anything I can do to better my chances(which was the LOR). Obviously most people will say it doesn’t count but I think it helps. People with higher SAT and GPA scores in my school did not get in. I think you have a better chance than you think. Best of luck.

Yes, I am a current student. I honestly don’t know of anyone specifically with a 23 ACT, but I’m sure there are some students with similar scores. I do know what several of my friends got but I don’t exactly go asking around haha.

@iubaccounting That would be a very strange thing to do, I thought I would just ask.

One of my friends with a 23 act and 3.3W gotten into IU but then again everyone at my school gets in because our curriculum is more rigorous so I’m pretty we get some sort of leeway with our grades. I could be completely wrong though. But it’s rare for someone at my school to not get in.

You might get waitlisted, but I think you will get accepted in the end. I don’t think it will necessarily be easy, however.

I got accepted with a 3.5 GPA and a 22 ACT

@Collegeee2308 this year?

yes

@Collegeee2308 they just responded back about my 7th semester grades and told me that they could not make a decision just yet and that I would get one by mid march. SO i basically got deferred twice. Just my luck.
