Would like you to chance my daughter for Rice

She is white. She has a little American Indian in her, but not much so won't matter.

Her unweighted GPA is over 3.7
All her classes have been preAP or AP
lots of EC and volunteer work
Plays music with city symphony orchestra.
in school orchestra
Friends of Rachel
Fencing
volunteer at Army Corp of Engineers environmental study and research center
In several honor societies from NHS to math honor society to French, etc
She is a legacy
She used to be deaf and has overcome that.

She has passed 2 AP tests so far. This year, she will be taking 3 more. This year, she is just a junior.

Apparently she has a great chance i mean she’s got everything: good gpa, challenging course load, very good EC’s and she has overcome adversity, but what are her sat scores?as you may know standardized tests are very important for admission committees.

Regardless of SAT/ACT scores, I can tell you this much: Rice is never a safety to anyone. If you want us to recommend you a safety, please state your SAT/ACT score, otherwise all I can say is: you’d be better off taking a test-optional school for a safety.

Sorry…she takes the SAT in November. Last year, her PSAT and SAT at beginning of Sophomore year were 190’s and 1900 range. Now she is in a class to improve her scores. I will know more then. I do not know if their practice tests are correct…but she is getting 210’s about on the practice PSATs. The course is through the public school and includes Saturdays so it has been intense. She never had a prep course before she took it last time.

I do not know if this answer helps at all.

She is only a junior now.

And currently, she is in APUSH and AP English and AP French this year. She had 2 APs before…one self study…music theory and AP Human Geo. She got 3 and 4 on those. She has no math this year but once the PSAT and SAT are over, she plans to take AP math through EPGY likely. She might end up having to wait until next summer. Her public school could not seem to fit math or science in her schedule this year.

Oh, and if Rice remains her top choice, she will be applying early decision binding which should raise her chances.

How much do people usually improve on their SATs from one year to the next? Remember, the one she took before is not valid for college admissions purposes. I even double checked. Because it was taken early in high school, it is not used, not even for schools who require all scores (at least the ones I asked).

And the lack of AP courses in 9th and 10th grade were because of lack of access.

I have no idea what type of high school can’t fit mathematics into a junior year student’s schedule. Elite schools, such as Rice are usually looking for kids with strong math and verbal skills who demonstrate an ability to handle the most rigorous course loads available in junior year. I am not sure having a high SAT score or an oline EPGY is going to demonstrate it. As long as Rice does not think she was trying to manage (window dress) her GPA, she may have a shot.

perazzi…we are in Lewisville ISD. They have a block system …so…4 classes in the fall and 4 in the spring. When you have an AP class, they generally make it worth 2 credits. She actually was in the gifted program (which the district just discontinued, but still has the classes this year) so she has AP English/APUSH combo class for 2 credits so it goes the entire year. She is in Orchestra so it goes the entire year. Then she has French 3 and AP French, which goes the entire year. She also has the PSAT team, so that was in fall. The AP math and AP sciences would have to start in the fall too because they go 2 credits. And no AP statistics were offered. (I mentioned in a previous post on another board last year about how the profile lists these courses as offered, but they actually will not fit).

IF she stays at this school next year, she will take AP Chem then, and AP English, Ap government, and if she has not completed EPGY AP maths, then she will take that then. I might see if she can get it through the community college. But honestly, the math teachers here seem clueless and I noticed some of the clueless math teachers from the high school teaching at the community college. So I have little hope.

She will be spending next summer at Interlochen again.

I think getting more math and/or science classes is going to be important for your daughter. Stating the obvious, it’s not a great idea to get stuck one one school, especially as a junior. Make sure she casts a wide net, and finds a safety she may like close to as much as Rice.

^I agree it. Is it possible to take math instead of AP US History or AP French, next semester? What was the last math class she took and what were grades in it? Perhaps she can take AP statistics if she does not feel comfortable with math and has already taken Pre Calculus.
