Chance for SDSU?

Yeah I know, a party school. But it's also really hard to get into because a lot of people wanna make it in there. And besides, it'd be nicer to have a more laid back atmosphere. I love partying, but all my friends (who happen to be INTENSE studiers don't.) I mean, I love them, but they really stress me out. It's like their lives depended on getting an A on every test.

But I digress. I just want a school where I feel like I can relax if need be.

The others schools I'm planning to go to (in order of interest):
-UC Santa Barbara
-CSU Long Beach
-Cal Poly Pomona
-CSU Fullerton

I'm currently a Sophomore in Honors English, Chemistry (they don't have an honors unfortunately), and Honors World History. I'm also taking Finite Math/Trigonometry (which is really a "senior class" at my school, Art, Dance, and French 2.

My GPA is currently 3.71, with A-G Subjects being approx. 3.60. (I'm not entirely clear on what exactly qualifies as an A-G course. I'm talking to the Counselor 'bout that.)

I've won a 1st Place in the Drawing department of the District Art Show in (I don't know if that's significant, but hey, there were 8 different schools with 2,500 kids each, so I consider it pretty legit.) and I've been dancing since I was 7-8 years old. I'm also part of the Drama club and French club at my school. And I tutor for French students.

Not bragging, but this is with little to no studying, and since I'm around the top 10% of my class, I can aim for over 2000 for my SATs. (I'm telling you though, I'm preparing myself the entire year during junior year. I can't afford the prep classes.) And if not, I'll keep taking the test over and over again 'till I get over.

I'm also intending to take AP English, History, Science, and Math classes starting next year.
Also, I'm taking AP Studio Art, and possibly AP Art History, so I can work on my portfolio.

I'd prefer if you'd give me tips on how to be a better candidate for colleges too. I've been stressing out because if I'm going to choose where I go for the next 4 years, I might as well choose right. Btw. I'm mainly going to major in Art, but I have interests in Languages like Japanese, German, and French.

Oh, and if there are any good public (chill) schools you think I should check out, tell me!

It’ll be easier to chance you once you’ve at least completed your junior year.

UCSB sounds like a really good school for you. Chill atmosphere with great parties but also excellent academics. However if you want to go to UCSB you’ll need to pull up your UC gpa to about a 3.9+.

I would also consider UCSC, which is a little easier to get into than UCSB. However, I feel like if you do actually get a 2000+ on the SAT you should try to go to a better school than the Cal States. Yes, its probably very “chill,” but the CSUs are usually commuter schools that lack that “college experience.”

Any reason why you’re not looking into private schools? Privates are more expensive but they give MUCH better financial aid. It is often cheaper for a student to go to a private than a public school. I think University of San Diego might match your interests.

The best thing to start doing now is keep your gpa very high and start visiting schools. :)

Yeah, I kinda figured. But I’ve been stressing. (It’s prolly cause I hang with Juniors. Haha.)

I can’t go to private schools. It’s WAY too much for me, by any means. I’m not eligible for Financial Aid because of my parent’s jobs. (We’re at the line where they stop any need-based aid.)

And besides, after all those years of being stressed out at good schools (my high, junior, and elementary school’s pretty up there) I’d like a break. I’m only going to college to be a better artist, anywho. I’m fairly sure (even strongly so) that there’s no need for me to know Adv. Calculus really well. If I’m going to college, it’s mostly for my enjoyment and for the sake of learning because I want to.

Plus, I’ve got APs next year which means my grades “technically” get bumped up a whole grade above. (They are considered a college level class, it seems fair to do that.) I don’t know. I just need to keep my grades to up, is all. But trust me, I’m taking ALOT. (I’ve got a lot of free time, no one invites me to parties. :frowning: )

Unfortunately, I can’t/won’t/not allowed to go past Santa Barbara. UCSB is already a 6 hour trip, believe it or not, and since UCSC is a lot farther, I’m like, “Nope.” I’m more of a Socal girl anyways. Yeah, but thanks for the suggestions and help.
