Hey guys I'm a rising junior and I want to apply to Boston U, NYU Stern, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Tufts University, UPenn, and Cornell. My SAT scores are 640W, 700M, and 670R. I will be retaking it very soon. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and 4.6 GPA (I have a 4.8 by the end of senior year if I get straight A's).
I haven't taken any SAT 2's yet. I will end up with 11-12 AP's by the end of senior year. I will be ranked 1 by the end of senior year.

My extracurriculars include:
1. Playing the piano for over 12 years (winning awards state and region wide, the competition is recognized by all colleges, I will probably be submitting an audition tape)
2. President of a financial club that I founded since the end of sophomore year
3. Secretary/VP of a Chinese cultural club I help founded junior year
4. Science Olympiad contestant (won state last year with team, placed in events, possibly going to nationals this year)
5. DECA/FBLA (placing in state, hopefully going to nationals this year)
6. Volunteer (hopefully over 100+ hours at library by end of senior year, help manage reselling discards)
7. Key Club member
Most of my clubs I have been participating since freshman or sophomore year. I might be officer of another club next year.

My recommendations should be decent to excellent and my essay will probably be decent (optimistically haha). My passion for the piano and finance will probably be the centers of my essays.

I know my SAT scores are pretty low but how would my chances improve if improve to 2200+? I'm an Asian. Thanks and I'll try to chance back!

Your race certainly wont help your chances.

Boston U - safety
NYU Stern - match
Columbia - reach
Harvard - reach
MIT - low reach
Tufts University - match
UPenn, low reach
Cornell, high match

Where are you getting this idea that MIT is a low reach school?
OP is an Asian and he/she does not have science achievements.
MIT could be the highest reach for OP.

MIT is 30% asian compared to 20% at Harvard. MIT is definitely not the highest reach. Harvard and Columbia admits 4-5% of RD applicants while MIT is around 9-10%. Know your facts first before replying.

Thanks seabasstiano! By the end of senior year I’ll be rank 1. And yeah for my extracurriculars piano was always a main point. I wanted to be an engineer as a freshman so thats why I have sci oly (I was in robotics and science bowl too but I didn’t include them) but now I want to go into finance. Thats why I created my own clubs, manage stuff at library, DECA/FBlA, and I’ll probably be in a microbank. Thanks again! Let me chance back

harvard, mit, and columbia are guna remain as really high reaches just because they ARE harvard, mit and columbia lol. i think you have a really good shot at the other schools while upenn is probably still going to be a low reach. defintely improve your SATs because i think that will really boost your shot at those schools. your ECs are great too, good luck! :D

btw i got my internship through a program called mouse squad, which is a school program that only exists in a few schools :P

Awwwww thats really awesome though! Once I reach 25 posts I’ll pm you. I hope you don’t mind talking about your experiences. The internship seems pretty awesome!

Scores are lacking as others have mentioned, but your application looks solid. Clearly quality > quantity in terms of your ECs, which is a good thing.

Definitely work on your SAT I and study over the summer (like I didn’t) for SAT II’s. By your EC’s and your essay ideas (My common app is on piano too!) it looks like you could have a trending theme of Piano and Finance in your application, so maybe look for a finance internship, teach kids piano, something like that to add to it. Everything else looks awesome… Just build on your passions so you stand out!
Can’t really say easily with your unsure-SAT scores but it looks like you’ll have a solid chance at NYU BU and Tufts… The others are so unpredictable though I don’t wanna say what I don’t know… The top kids in my school have been getting deferred by them ED. Keep it up though and you’ll have a shot…Good luck!

Thanks redvelvet! Good luck to you too. I think I’ll be teaching kids soon too but I’ll be paid haha and accompanying stringed instruments. Which pieces do you play for piano?
