Hi,

So out of high school I went to a 4-year private university for one year (Chemical Engr major). After that year, I decided to leave but my gpa from that school wasn't that great (around 2.2 major gpa).

This year, I started at my local community college and it's looking like I will be recieving a 4.0 first semester.

My extra-curriculars include: highly involved in both band and robotics for all 4 years in HS, and involved in one of the nation's more prestigious collegiate marching bands, performing at events including movie premiers and parades.

I have work experience as a tutor for science and math subjects.

The majority of my community service was at a hospital for around 100 hours. I also volunteered at food drives.

So what are my chances to get into UCB under the Chemical Engr & Materials Science & Engr major?

Also, what other UCs do you recommend applying to under the same or similar major?

Thanks.

Your GPA is a main concern. 2.2 cumulative will mean that even after getting a 4.0 this semester, you will have a 2.5-2.6. That is not impressive for UCB. Where’d you go to school?

I went to USC. I am currently taking the equivalent courses at my community college because I wanted to restart. Will the As I recieve in the CC supercede the grades I recieved at USC?

You should consider academic renewal if you have any D’s or F’s. C’s cannot be considered for academic renewal. Your grades from USC will show on your transcript when you apply. Retaking the same courses that you received a C or above might not be a good idea when you apply to graduate schools.

I am not applying to a graduate program. I went to USC for one year and then left after deciding I did not like it. Then I entered my local community college and and pretty much followed assist for what courses I enrolled in.

So my question is do the UCs only factor your best grade into your transfer GPA?

For example, I got a B- in General Chem I at USC. I will probably get an A in General Chem I at my community college.

I got a B in USC’s ENGL 1A, I will probably get an A in my CC’s ENGL 1A Honors.

However, I got a C- in General Chem II at USC. I have General Chem II planned for next semester at my CC.

According to Cal’s guidelines for transferring they only consider technical courses for credit in which you have earned a B or higher.

It would be really unfortunate if my transfer opportunity is jeopardized just because I didn’t do well at USC even though I turned things around later.

Oh I see what you meant. Though I’m not too worried about a graduate program seeing I didn’t do so well in freshman year but then turned everything around for the next three years.

Right now I’m more concerned about undergraduate.

i think that while your gpa will be concern they will see what you did to correct it. it could go either way depending on how they are feeling, you know? but showing that you retook the classes is a GREAT example of your dedication to improving your academic record and shows drive. if i were an admissions officer i would really love that. not all students would be so proactive about correcting past mistakes.
